The Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (AVP-DEIB) is a key leader within the Division of Academic Affairs, reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and serving as a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team. This role focuses on driving diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts within Academic Affairs and collaborates closely with Human Resources and Student Affairs. The AVP-DEIB collaborates with campus stakeholders to develop a strategic vision aligned with Academic Affairs while contributing to broader campus-wide DEIB efforts, including the College’s strategic plan. The AVP-DEIB advances DEIB initiatives impacting faculty, with a particular focus on faculty recruitment, retention, and the enhancement of cultural responsiveness of academic programs. Critical elements of the role include faculty community and professional development, climate assessment, strategic planning, and communications, ensuring that DEIB is integrated into the core mission of Academic Affairs and consistent with the College’s Catholic and Holy Cross mission. The AVP-DEIB will collaborate with the AVP for Student Success & Retention on advocating for students’ needs, fostering a culture of belonging, and overseeing the bias incident reporting system. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Work with Deans, Department Chairs, Graduate Directors, and Human Resources to ensure equitable job searches, emphasizing attracting and retaining a diverse faculty. The AVP-DEIB will lead trainings for all faculty searches and the Rank & Tenure Committee, providing guidance on best practices for reducing bias in hiring and evaluation processes. Work with academic program leadership, both faculty and staff, on cultivating inclusive departmental cultures and practices. Collaborate with colleagues in Human Resources and Student Affairs to establish and advance strategic DEIB priorities and policies, while developing, implementing, and assessing DEIB educational and professional development initiatives for faculty and staff. Work closely with the Assistant Vice President for Planning & Budgeting to guide the development and implementation of a comprehensive DEIB strategic plan for Academic Affairs, incorporating inclusive excellence metrics, progress measurement, accountability promotion, continuous improvement, and adaptable adjustments to align with the College’s strategic plan. Identify and address policies and practices that present challenges to the retention of staff, faculty, and students of color. Generate verbal and written reports to keep stakeholders informed about the progress and outcomes of DEIB initiatives. Chair the Institutional Diversity Action Committee and co-chair the Bias Education Response Team and the Racial Equity and Justice Institute Campus Team. Maintain professional development through engagement in local, regional, and national higher education DEI organizations and initiatives (e.g., AICUM Inclusive Leadership Program, NADOHE, NCORE, Racial Equity Justice Institute, etc.). Other duties as assigned. Education and Experience Masters in a related field/discipline and a minimum of five years of experience in two of the following: institutional leadership, programming, and/or multicultural organizational development. Familiarity with Catholic higher education. Demonstrated experience with assisting in strategic planning related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. A demonstrated understanding of contemporary diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging concepts/issues as they apply to higher education. A demonstrated ability to design and lead challenging and complex conversations around race, gender, and/or sexual identities. Ability to teach at least one course in an undergraduate or graduate program.
