Cadets will work a maximum of 24 hours per week with the exception of extra shifts assigned during vacation relief. Cadets may be assigned to work any hour of the day, on any shift, but consideration will be given to school assignments.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Police Cadet program is a trainee program designed for career development into the law enforcement field as a Police Officer. The Police Cadet is under immediate to general supervision, and performs non-hazardous duties throughout the Police Department.
EXAMINATION:
Candidates deemed most qualified will be invited to a written examination, which will include English usage, public relations, basic mathematical ability, and written communication skills. Those candidates who successfully pass the written exam will be invited to an oral board interview. Failure on the written or interview exam will remove the candidate from further consideration.
EXAMINATION WEIGHTS:
Written Exam: Pass/Fail
Oral Board Interview: 100%
BACKGROUND PROCESS: Prior to hire date, applicants must pass a comprehensive background investigation that includes, but is not limited to: financial stability, driving record, criminal record, drug usage, polygraph, and general character; and must pass a medical examination, which includes a drug screen.

NOTE: Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment. Cadets are permitted to remain in the program up to, but no later than, their 24th birthday. If high school is completed, must maintain enrollment in an accredited college or university carrying nine or more units per semester or equivalent with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
Experience: No experience required.
License: Possession of a valid California class "C" driver's license is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, climb, stoop, bend, and reach; must be able to physically restrain and control combative individuals. This position requires extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the arms, wrists, and hands, including writing and using a keyboard. Ability to adapt to exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, and mechanical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for shift work, on-call, overtime, and stand-by.

- General parking enforcement and issuance of parking citations.
- investigates and writes a selected variety of crime and traffic collision reports when no suspect is present.
- Collects and preserves evidence.
- Performs clerical assignments including but not limited to answering telephone requests; processes reports and maintains records and files.

- Provides information and assistance to the public.
- Performs custodial checks on inmates.
- Collects monies for public requests of documents.
