Under general supervision, this position operates construction equipment such as backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, box blade, asphalt machine, road grader, etc., for the purpose of construction, drainage, and maintenance. Determines elevation for projects and composes such information. Interacts with other departments, agencies, and the public as required. Provides masonry skills for drainage projects. Performs general labor as needed. Works in a professional, safe, and efficient manner. Maintains a valid Alabama Class B CDL. Reports to the Street Maintenance and Personnel Superintendent.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of experience in a job related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Qualifications:
Flagger Training and Erosion Control Training.
Valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The City's group insurance is currently through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. The employees' health, vision, hearing and dental premiums are paid in full by the City. The City pays 50% of family coverage. The employee cost for family health, vision and hearing is $67.47 per semi-monthly deduction cycle and dental is $10.00 per semi-monthly deduction cycle. - Operates a variety of machinery and/or equipment to include rubber tire loaders, small tractors, backhoes, bucket trucks, and bulldozers.
- Operates a Bulldozer to slope or shape ditches for proper drainage; levels rock or dirt for road building; clears land; and stocks piling.
- Inspects and maintains equipment, which includes checking fluid levels, tracks, and cracks/fractures in frame and axles; assesses worn tires and hoses, hydraulic leaks, glass for visibility, worn belts, and filters; and greases equipment and attachments.
- Interacts and communicates with a wide variety of groups and individuals to include the public and City Department Heads.
- Collects elevation information using engineering equipment for the City Engineer and Street Superintendent; and applies correct elevation for all drainage and road projects.
- Sets up traffic control, laying out signs and cones, for low and high traffic conditions, as needed in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Performs masonry/concrete work laying block and brick to proper elevations for drainage inlets; pours sidewalks; forms head walls; pours footings; and pours slabs.
- Performs general labor patching asphalt; uses jack hammers and chain saws; maintains equipment; hauls dirt; fills potholes with asphalt; and directs traffic.
- Performs general drainage maintenance; and lays pipe.
- Maintains a basic understanding of ADA rules.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of experience in a job related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of division policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Knowledge of irrigation design and repair; knowledge of landscape design.
- Knowledge of chemicals and techniques used for plant disease and pest control.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
- Ability to establish priorities with appropriate attention, details, and the ability to think through and analyze a problem resulting in the best possible solution.
- Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
- Ability to operate and repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
- Ability to operate and repair medium equipment and machinery.
