CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: BUILDING MAINTENANCE HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform semi-skilled to skilled work functions operating motorized medium to heavy weight equipment to maintain and repair City facilities, grounds, dune walkovers and boardwalks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates equipment in for the Capital Projects/Building Maintenance department
May serve as a lead worker; provides guidance and instruction to other crew members; and reviews work as assigned.
Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Drives or operates a variety of varied purpose equipment and performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions.
May be required to work as a crew member for assigned maintenance projects: cuts and cleans ditches; installs water, sewer, and storm drain systems; constructs and repairs streets and rights of way; repairs pot holes; pours, sets and finishes concrete work; collects, hauls and disposes of debris and other materials; hauls dirt; digs and grades dirt; pours and rolls asphalt, mows grass;
Conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
Performs daily preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and vehicles.
Assists with special projects and seasonal work.
Uses a variety of hand tools including shovels, hammers, pick axes, rakes, pipe wrenches, channel locks, transit level, tape measure, and carpentry tools.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates one or more of the following: motor graders, scraper, excavator, compactor, tapping machines, milling machine, paving machine, spray truck, street sweeper, asphalt roller, grader, dozer, track hoe, patch truck, compost separator, compost blower, front end loader, box blade, beach rake, sprayers, tractor trailer, roll-off truck, knuckle boom truck, front and rear loaders, dump truck, jack hammer, back hoe, pick-up truck, boring machine, dump truck, mowers, skid loader, lifts, dump truck with trailer or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
Ensures that construction, maintenance, and repair activities are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards: conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Performs various tasks involving general building maintenance or construction projects: paints interior/exterior surfaces; cuts, solders, and/or welds metal pipes or parts; removes, repairs, and replaces floor/ceiling tile; cleans gutters; removes, repairs and replaces roofing materials, etc.
Performs a variety of carpentry duties; constructs small buildings; builds and installs cabinets, etc.
Determines amount of materials needed to complete projects and gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies; monitors inventory levels and initiates requests for new or replacement materials as required.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas: monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary. Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after hurricanes and other natural disasters as necessary.
Performs other related duties as required, requested or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; two (2) years of experience in equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). May be required to obtain and maintain other certifications.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
