Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of heavy construction equipment, such as:
- Loaders: Front-end loaders, skid steers for scooping, loading, and transporting materials.
- Excavators: For digging trenches, foundations, and other features according to blueprints.
- Dozers: Bulldozers for clearing land, grading surfaces, and pushing materials.
- Backhoes: For combined excavating and loading functions with a bucket on the front and an excavator arm on the back.
- Graders: For leveling surfaces and creating precise slopes.
- Other Specialized Equipment: Depending on the project (e.g., cranes, pavers, rollers).
- Perform routine maintenance on the assigned equipment, ensuring functionality and safety.
- Conduct pre-operation checks to identify and report any equipment malfunctions.
- Follow established safety protocols and procedures on the construction site.
- Communicate effectively with other crew members to coordinate tasks and ensure smooth operation.
- Assist with surveying, setting up equipment for operation, and cleaning up debris as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of daily equipment operation and maintenance.
- Education: High school diploma or GED (preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience operating various types of heavy construction equipment.
- Licenses: Valid driver's license.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and manual dexterity.
- Strong ability to read and understand blueprints or construction plans.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good physical condition, able to perform tasks that require bending, lifting, operating machinery for extended periods, and working in potentially harsh weather conditions.
- Certifications for operating specific types of heavy equipment (e.g., crane operator certification).
- Knowledge of construction materials and procedures.
- Understanding of basic construction principles.
- Heavy equipment operators typically work outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, heat, and cold.
- The job can be physically demanding and requires adherence to strict safety protocols.
- Construction sites can be loud and dusty.
- Travel between different job sites is common.
