Function

The City of Ankeny has a need for an individual for a summer internship. The internship is intended to provide on the job experience for those interested in helping maintain the sports complex fields and grounds in the Park & Recreation Department.

This is a paid internship, $17.00/hour, 40 hours per week for thirteen weeks to begin May 19, 2025 and ending August 15, 2025.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Specific duties shall include, but not limited to:
    • Clay work including infield skin, mounds, and home plate.
    • Turf work including fertilizer and pesticide applications, mowing, and edging.
  • All cultural practices including mowing, irrigation, aerification, topdressing, deep tine, slicing, etc.
  • Basic equipment maintenance.
  • Irrigation scheduling and repair.
  • Wear management.

  • Entry Requirements and Skills

    • All applicants will be considered; however, preference will be given to current students majoring in Sports Turf or Golf Course Management.
    • Must be able to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Must maintain a valid Iowa drivers' license.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    • Outdoor setting, extreme weather conditions.


    This position is not eligible for health benefits but may be eligible for IPERS. IPERS eligibility and participation will begin once an employee earns $1,000 or more in two consecutive quarters and will continue for the duration of employment.
