Position Overview
The Council seeks an experienced Director, Individual & Special Giving, to secure philanthropic support from current and potential donors and build the pipeline of supporters for the Council. The Director will be responsible for creating and implementing an integrated annual and leadership giving program (up to $25,000) designed to increase financial support from, and engagement with, the Council community and achieve ambitious growth in annual giving contributions. The person in this role will work closely with the Vice President of Development & Membership and the Senior Vice President/Chief Revenue Officer to build the pipeline of annual donors to the Council and identify, cultivate and solicit a portfolio of high-potential supporters. This is a hybrid position based in Chicago with an expected 3 days per week on site.
Responsibilities
The Director, Individual & Special Giving will: Develop and execute a multi-year strategy to increase unrestricted dollars raised annually, as well as overall participation rates, with clearly defined financial goals ($1M in FY24). The number of annual donors and dollars raised are the primary metrics by which success will be measured; the Director will also be expected to develop strategies that result in members upgrading to higher donor club levels.
Design and execute multi-channel appeals (mail, email and social media) using best practices and the full range of fundraising tools to meet annual goals.
Work with Council colleagues to plan annual solicitation calendar, identifying compelling solicitors and solicitation mechanisms to inspire individual giving.
Track progress toward achieving financial goals throughout the year, pivoting as necessary to add new and creative tactics to achieve goals.
Manage stewardship plans for new and renewing donors at the $1,000 - $10,000 levels (President's Club). Identify and develop creative pathways for recognizing and increasing support from leadership giving circles by providing distinctive opportunities for participating in Council activities.
Serve as the primary relationship manager of a portfolio of 100-125 donors with the capacity and inclination to make mid-level leadership gifts (ranging from $1,000 - $25,000), with an emphasis on upgrading gifts at the high four and low five-figure levels. As part of managing this portfolio, the Director will conduct 40-50 in-person visits annually; Personally solicit 20 five-figure gifts on an annual basis.
Collaborate with Council colleagues, members and volunteers to identify and build the pipeline of donors with the financial capacity to make a philanthropic impact on the Council.
In partnership with the Development and Marketing colleagues, ensure that donor records and external activity are current; help maintain integrity of the database system (Salesforce) and ensure that it is being utilized in an efficient and effective manner.
Support the senior management team in their major gifts fundraising activities; attend and staff Council events.
Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
The Director will be strategic, highly organized, and results-oriented. The ideal candidate will enjoy introducing the Council's work, what makes the organization unique and worthy of investment, and discussing a range of Council activities with a diverse community of current and potential donors. They will excel at building relationships and securing opportunities for financial support; be a self-starter, and driven to achieve and exceed financial goals. They will demonstrate a strong work ethic, creativity and curiosity, and a desire to make a positive impact in the world. The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: 7 to 10 years of non-profit fundraising experience, preferably in annual or leadership annual giving, including a track record of securing philanthropic gifts from individuals.
A bachelor's degree is required.
Ability to create and manage fundraising plans/timelines.
Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
Ability to initiate and build relationships with philanthropic leaders, next generation donors, and representatives of family foundations.
Ability to maintain confidential information, exercise discretion, and use sound judgment.
Skilled at collaborating and fostering collegial working relationships with staff members at all levels.
Ability and willingness to work evening and early morning events, and travel occasionally for donor meetings and events beyond downtown Chicago.
Interest in and commitment to the mission and goals of the Council and its focus on international/global affairs.
