About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Role Overview:

The Indiana Department of Correction (DOC) is seeking a Data Science and Analytics (DSA) Intern to join our agency in the summer of 2025. The intern will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to, program assessments, data quality analysis, modeling staff and incarcerated individuals' behavior, and predicting post-release outcomes. DOC oversees the housing, care, and rehabilitation of all individuals incarcerated in a state correctional facility, as well as the continued oversight of individuals released to parole within the state. The major focus within DSA includes investigating evidence-based approaches to reducing violent conduct, improving patient care, increasing the likelihood of successful re-entry for returning citizens, promoting staff wellness, and improving operational support across facilities.

Salary Statement:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

Performing data extraction, cleaning, and analysis to identify trends and discrepancies

Collaborating with team members to analyze data sets and issue reports and dashboards

Help prepare and organize results and requirements documentation for executive review

Conducting research on and developing models of best practices for correctional operations, patient care, and more

What You'll Need for Success:

Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

Academic work in related field

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline

Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels

Ability to conduct well-informed research

Ability to solve complex, critical problems

Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
