Position Summary:
The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and preparing specimens for testing, ensuring that patients experience minimal discomfort and receive compassionate care. This role is essential to our commitment to providing high-quality healthcare, as it involves collecting accurate samples and maintaining specimen integrity across a diverse patient demographic.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Specimen Collection & Handling
    • Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge as required.
    • Collect and store specimens following established protocols.
    • Ensure specimens are accurately labeled, processed, and stored to meet test requirements, maintaining sample integrity through correct temperature and container handling.
  2. Patient Interaction & Care
    • Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients, providing a courteous and calming presence.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in venipuncture techniques, using both straight and butterfly needles as needed.
    • Communicate effectively to ensure patient comfort and understanding.
  3. Order & Requisition Verification
    • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, checking that all information aligns with physician orders and test requirements.
    • Verify test requisitions or computer labels against patient scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before specimen processing.
  4. Regulatory Compliance & Safety
    • Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations for specimen handling, storage, and transport.
    • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, and maintain a safe, clean workspace.
    • Participate in annual department trainings to stay updated on best practices and regulatory guidelines.
  5. Administrative Support
    • Package specimens for transport according to laboratory protocols.
    • Answer telephone inquiries, providing laboratory results or information as appropriate.
    • Assist with additional duties as assigned, contributing to efficient department operations.

Qualifications:
  • Skills: Proficiency in blood draw techniques, specimen preparation, and adherence to lab protocols
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations, experience with laboratory equipment (centrifuge, sample containers)
  • Other Requirements: Ability to wear PPE, strong communication skills, attention to detail
