Job Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and preparing specimens for laboratory testing, ensuring minimal discomfort for patients across various demographics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws and specimen preparation, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing samples as required by test orders.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established protocols, ensuring proper labeling and handling to maintain sample integrity.
  • Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients, minimizing discomfort and anxiety.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles for blood collection.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately, verifying details to ensure correctness.
  • Package specimens for transport, adhering to temperature and handling requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend annual department trainings.
  • Respond to phone inquiries and provide laboratory results when needed.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvements as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (required in certain states).
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • 2-4 years of total work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure accuracy in sample handling.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and team members.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and infection control practices.
