The City of Pasadena - Public Works Department is currently seeking an experienced journey level HVAC Technician (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) to perform journey level work on a variety of facility related equipment, including but not limited to: all types of HVAC systems, exhaust systems, associated control systems, and duct systems. Technician will occasionally provide: basic refrigeration assessments and repairs (e.g., freezers and ice machines); Building Automation Systems (BAS) support.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be versatile in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems, including but not limited to: boilers, chillers (reciprocating and centrifugal), cooling towers, heat pumps, split systems, package units, air handling equipment, VFDs, VAVs, VRFs, fan coils, pumps, and motors. Candidate will occasionally provide the following: refrigeration assessments and repairs (e.g., freezers and ice machines); BAS support. An understanding of, and ability to measure, air and water balance and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) is desirable. This person will have excellent communication skills, strong customer service skills, boundless energy, a strong work ethic, is a team player, and also works well independently.

There is currently one full-time vacancy in the Building Systems and Fleet Management Division of the Public Works Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future. Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.
Special Requirements
This position involves frequent travel to various sites and locations; in addition to performing emergency call out work during and after working hours, which may include weekends.
Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of employment.
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPER (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

Essential Functions

- Installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects all types of HVAC equipment including but not limited to: valves, pumps, piping, thermostats, switches, pressure regulators, circuit boards and VFD's. Assists with the installation of Building Automation System (BAS) controls and components as needed.
- Ability to work with electricity from low voltage up to and including 480 volt, 3 phase.
- Properly handle refrigerant in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines as it applies to, but is not limited to, leak checks and repairs.
- Proper use of test equipment, gauges, tube machine, tools and P.P.E.
- A basic understanding of water treatment, descaling chiller tubes, boiler tubes, cooling towers, evaporative condensers, and chemical injection for water treatment. HVAC technician will be asked to apply their knowledge in the oversight of vendors completing these, and other, specialized tasks.
- Works on all types of piping systems; chilled water, hot water, steam, city water, glycol, and condenser water; including but not limited to copper, steel, black iron, and PVC, cut and thread pipe, solder and or braze fittings and groove locks; replaces valves, switches, pressure reducers, fittings, gauges, and sensors.
