Job Description
The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Technician (Technician) to work in the Engineering Department at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction located in Billerica, MA. The Technician will work directly with Maintenance and Engineering personnel as needed in performing necessary HVAC functions including, but not limited to: monitoring, assessing and responding to all alarms in a timely manner; maintaining and operating all HVAC systems, including ordering, maintaining inventory, changing of all necessary filters, maintaining and changing belts and greasing all equipment on HVAC chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, and hot water boilers. The Technician will also ensure all HVAC systems are inspected, maintained on regular basis and prepared for inspections as required by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety. This is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement (NEPBA, Local 500) that reports to the Chief Engineer, Facilities Manager and/or the Assistant Superintendent.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Working and interacting with the Metasys Building Operations and controls system;
- Understanding of and working on the basic refrigeration cycle for use of gauges and identification of the difference between high and low pressure applications;
- Understanding of and working with wiring diagrams and know the difference between low and high voltage controls;
- Knowledge of the ‘three R's’ of refrigeration which are recover, reclaim and recycle and how to apply knowledge to different applications throughout the facility;
- Understanding of and experience with the differences between a water-cooled condenser and an air-cooled condenser; work on motor applications, such as direct drive, belt driven or gear driven motors;
- Ability to able to work on ice machines, reach in and walk in refrigerators, along with freezers and understand the basic functionality of this equipment;
- Understanding of and experience with the differences between an open loop and closed loop system and have knowledge of chillers and boilers;
- Working knowledge of pumps, motors, actuators, variable air volume (VAV), variable frequency drive (VFD), exhaust fans, dampers, split systems (ductless or not) and package units. In addition, must understand how these parts work according to the application it is operating and have the ability to perform preventive maintenance on these parts;
- Performing and/or assisting in other facilities and maintenance duties as needed and required by Chief Technician, Facilities Manager and/or the Assistant Superintendent.
The individual selected for the position of HVAC Technician shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules and policies regarding safety and security.
Working Conditions:
- Working in a correctional facility on a 24/7 basis; weekends, nights, and holidays, and subject to being forced to work over 8 hours based on operational needs;
- Assigned to 6:00am to 2:00pm shift with ability to work varied shifts (6:00am - 2:00pm; 2:00pm to 10:00pm; 10:00pm – 6:00am);
- May encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders and interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress;
- Standing and walking for prolonged periods of time;
- May be required to work alone in an isolated area;
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 lbs.
- May work under exposure to adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications:
- Valid and active HVAC license to maintain and operate all HVAC equipment in Massachusetts;
- Minimum of five (5) years experience as a licensed HVAC Technician or with a Massachusetts Apprentice Refrigeration license is a plus;
- Working knowledge of Trane Tracer program, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and Metasys Building Operations and controls system required;
- Must have a Universal chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certification and at least thirty (30) hours of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Certified Training Certificate;
- High School graduate or possess a General Educational Development (GED) equivalency certificate;
- Strong written and communication skills, ability to keep accurate records and generate timely reports as required;
- Ability to attend any other training as required by the MSO;
- Must have own transportation
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
