Target hiring amount for this position is $112,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Job Summary

The Lead Data Analyst will be responsible for creating, deploying, and supporting crucial reporting and analytics solutions leveraged by staff and faculty across Northwestern University.

In this role, you will work as part of a collaborative Data Management and Analytics (DMA) team of data analysts, report developers, and data warehouse developers. We partner closely with University business customers and other IT teams across Northwestern to deliver solutions. The DMA team works in a hybrid environment with two days on the Evanston campus each week to build strong working relationships.

An ideal candidate for this position will have proven business analyst skills and be proficient in technical skills. Our data analyst team captures and documents business requirements, builds technical requirements, validates code, manages user acceptance testing, creates end-user documentation, and manages projects. They also dive deep into source systems, query source databases and data warehouse tables with SQL, help build logical data models and are comfortable with self-service tools in IBM Cognos or Tableau.

The Lead Data Analyst will lead a team of three full-time Northwestern staff. This includes traditional management duties such as checking in with staff in regular one-on-one discussions, developing skills and career goals as well as quarterly and annual reviews. Additionally, the Lead Data Analyst will work with DMA team leadership on agile sprint management, project portfolio planning, and strategic team planning.

Specific Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning
  • Manages and influences school, department, and core office representatives to ensure that user requirements are met, all gaps are documented, and all deliverables approved (adhering to approved methodology and documentation standards).
  • Leads a team ensuring the proper installation, configuration, and functioning of enterprise systems. Also manages knowledge transfer of contractors to staff at project completion.
  • Contributes to defining methodology and documentation standards, and periodically reviewing them to integrate appropriate industry practices.
  • Represents organizational area in regard to advisory groups, planning committees, and similar standing work groups whose purpose is to develop requirements related to the implementation of enterprise business systems.
Administration
  • Reviews and verifies that documentation of training materials, process, procedures and system/application is accurate.
  • Identifies implementation dependencies and constraints; ensures these are addressed.
  • Leads project resources to ensure that tasks are completed on schedule and that issues, risks and variances are mitigated in a timely manner.
Development
  • Leads test script execution both internally and cross functionally between systems and departments; performs detailed testing to ensure that the implemented software functions correctly.
  • Manages iterative feedback processes among users, developers, and analysts to ensure software functionality aligns with requirements. Granted authority to make decisions based on knowledge of interdependency between systems and business processes.
Performance
  • Leads technical, reporting and application resources to analyze and resolve production issues in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates and supports off hours initiatives as needed.
  • Consults and informs manager of issues that have system-wide impact.
  • Provides guidance and leadership for process and feature design initiatives
  • Monitors application performance and escalates critical performance issues with technical resources and management. Granted authority to make decisions on solution approach based on in-depth system knowledge and best practices.
Supervises
  • Leads work direction and/or staff such as team members, subordinates, contractors, vendors, students, etc.
  • Recommends staff hires/terminations. Writes position descriptions; leads recruiting process.
  • Coaches and mentors staff.
  • Manages complex projects ensuring timelines, deliverables and expectations are met.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as computer science, information technology, or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
