General Description

The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department has an opening for a Heavy Equipment Operator II.An employee in this class performs skilled work operating heavy equipment for the Department of Solid Waste Management. Work includes operating a variety of heavy equipment and machinery at the recycling pad and the permitted Solid Waste Construction and Demolition Landfill, processing and loading recyclable materials, assisting residents with unloading materials and sorting into the correct box containers and driving or transporting large equipment to Solid Waste sites across the County.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Disposal Operations Manager with considerable leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures, in the performance of duties. Does related work as required.

Trainee Status - If an applicant does not possess a CDL Class B License upon hire, a trainee appointment may be available to allow the applicant to obtain the required CDL within six months of hire.

  • This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. Fitness for Duty Assessment is required.
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse clearance is required based on CDL possession.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) test equivalency AND four (4) years of work experience in the operation of heavy equipment used in landfills, recycling, construction or related operations.

Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of the FMCSA Clearinghouse.

Trainee Status: Possession of a North Carolina Driver's License Class C issued by the State of North Carolina. Applicant must complete training and licensing requirements for a NC Commercial Driver's License Class B within six months of hire.

Possession of or ability to obtain a NC-SWANA Landfill Operations certification within twelve (12) months of hire (subject to Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) scheduling.)

All offers of employment are conditional upon successful pre-employment drug testing. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.

Participation in the Drug and Alcohol program is required.
