Hardware Engineer Intern

Role Overview:

The Hardware Engineer Intern assists the responsible Hardware Engineer in the development, fabrication, debugging and documenting of PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) for high speed applications.

This Internship with MACOM will help the Intern to gain valuable work experience in a key discipline, build professional relationships, and take ownership of a business-critical project.

During the 12 weeks each Intern will:

> Be given an individual and well-defined project with set outcome goals

> Gain hands on experience

> Receive excellent training and ongoing supervision

> Be invited to attend an intern webinar series

> Attend networking/social events

> Attend and present at Poster Session about each Interns project successes and pitfalls

> Receive formal, written feedback

The specific responsibilities of the Hardware Engineer Intern may include:
  • PCB Board definition
a. Collect inputs from users of the PCB, including but not limited to, validation engineer, product engineer, IC design engineer etc.;

b. Assist the responsible Hardware Engineer in drafting an BRD (Board Requirements Document) to clearly define what is expected of the board;

c. Review BRD with users and get their sign-off;
  • Schematic Design
a. Create symbols of new components;

b. Consult with designers, application engineers for circuit around the device under test;

c. Component selection and design certain circuits, e.g. Power management circuit, I2C and SPI control circuit;

d. Capture schematic using Mentor's xDX Designer;
  • Layout
a. Create decals for new components using AutoCAD and Mentor's PADS.

b. Assist the responsible Hardware Engineer in the layout of the board using Mentor's PADS;
  • Boards Fabrication
a. Prepare documents for PCB fabrication;

b. Assist the responsible Hardware Engineer in creating costed Bill of Materials;

c. Update the components database as required;
  • Lab Test

a. Verification of power circuits and low speed communication;

b. Debug of the design.

Requirements:

This position requires a background in Electrical Engineering, familiarity with office productivity tools such as Microsoft Excel and Words, and basic knowledge of CAD tools and procedures used for PCB design and fabrication.
