The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Accounting Specialist for the Greater Birmingham Command, located in Birmingham, AL.
Job Summary: Performs specialized bookkeeping tasks in the recording and maintenance of precise fiscal records and financial data; applies detailed bookkeeping knowledge and skills to a varied bookkeeping tasks such as recording revenue and expense transactions, checking entries, processing payments, reconciling accounts, and preparing basic financial reports for assigned accounts; prepares and maintains financial records in an accurate, complete and timely manner while ensuring the integrity, security and accountability of Salvation Army financial accounts. Under the guidance of the Business Manager, Lead Bookkeeper or Divisional Director of Finance, keeps the Commanding Officer abreast of the financial condition of the local unit at all times.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping principles and practices and of applications to accounting transactions; modern day, to include relational and dimension, data entry as they pertain to bookkeeping functions. Knowledge of computerized accounting; of modern office methods, procedures and practice. Knowledge of accounting principles and practices; financial accounting systems and procedures; budget preparation; project management skills necessary to track activity of a multitude of accounts and ensure compliance with approved guidelines and deadlines for the same. Ability to monitor account activity and ensure compliance with a multitude of guidelines and budget constraints. Ability to review check requests and supporting documents in order to determine compliance with established guidelines. Ability to research account discrepancies and/or inquire and provide accurate and complete information. Ability to perform account reconciliation; process financial documents quickly with independent thought tin order to meet tight deadlines Accurately and completely communicate the status of accounts to other by telephone, mail or in person in a courteous and timely manner; prepare routine and special financial reports and records; contain numerical totals and balances and to verify information from complex forms and transfer to computer or manual reports; accepts fiscal responsibility of assigned functionalized accounts and ability to maintain confidentiality of all information associated with the job,
Education and Experience: Two-year college or technical school degree in accounting, bookkeeping, business or related field and two years' experience in the performance of increasingly complex bookkeeping work utilizing a computerized accounting system with detailed exposure to double entry fund accounting or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to perform complex mathematical computations repeatedly, rapidly and accurately. Ability to keypunch information into a computer. Ability to sort and file documents alphabetically and numerically. Ability to operate various general office equipment including a computer, 10 key calculator. Ability to work well under pressure of deadlines Ability to follow instructions and work independently with limited supervision, Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time. Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
