JOB FUNCTION: Legal Secretary


A Legal Secretary is responsible for handling routine and advanced duties for a legal department or firm. They assist with legal research, draft, and file legal documents, schedule court depositions, hearings, and other meetings.


Key duties and responsibilities include:


Preparing legal documents such as contracts, briefs, motions, summonses, and standard correspondence.

Managing and updating the organization's legal databases and systems.

Conducting legal research as directed and maintaining files of legal cases in an organized manner.

Scheduling and coordinating appointments, meetings, and court dates.

Communicating with clients in a professional manner and ensuring confidentiality at all times.

Overseeing all administrative details of legal proceedings, including preparing case files for court.

Assisting with billing, tracking hours, and handling other routine administrative tasks, as required.

Required skills and qualifications:


Previous experience working as a legal secretary or in a law firm.

Strong communication skills, both written and oral.

Familiarity with legal documents and workflow.

Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.

Proficiency with computer software such as MS Office, especially Word and Excel, as well as legal research software, like Westlaw or LexisNexis.

Understanding of legal language and principles, research methods, court pleadings and processes, and other related matters.

A certificate or degree in legal studies or a similar field is often required in this role. Many employers also prefer candidates with one to three years of work experience in a law firm or legal secretary position.
