The temporary positions are on an as needed basis and subjected to your availability. The assignments vary from short term to long term depending on the needs of the school. There is no retirement or paid holiday benefit and you are paid for the hours worked. There is a paid leave benefit per the State of Maryland (if you work 30+ hours in a pay period, you earn an hour of paid leave.)

Position Summary

Is this position exempt from overtime pay?

No

Performs general secretarial and clerical office tasks. Duties are specific based on assignment in a school, central office or satellite offices. This experienced level of clerical work involves responsibility for performing varied and moderately complex tasks including preparing and processing forms, records, correspondence, memoranda, documents, and reports. Bilingual and biliterate in targeted language may be required depending on assignment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Answers and screens telephone calls and visitors. Handles requests and complaints from parents, students, and offices.

2. Enrolls new students and completes fall/spring kindergarten enrollment. Maintains student records/files. Withdraws student records and forwards same to new schools. Maintains strict confidentiality with respect to handling student record/personal data.

3. Schedules and copies materials for meetings.

4. Prepares and maintains office records of all students on class lists, student folders, card files, index cards, and attendance record/reports.

5. Receives and provides messages and makes telephone calls for teachers and principals.

6. Composes and distributes reports, letters, forms, lists, newsletters, memos, agenda, schedules, and/or other correspondence.

7. Operates and maintains standard office machines and equipment.

8. Receives, sorts, and distributes mail.

9. Assists with the preparation of instructional requests, tests, and other such materials as assigned.

10. Signs students in and out of school, issues tardy passes and keeps absentee/tardy records.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
• High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate.

Experience
• One (1) year of recent general office experience performing work of a progressively responsible nature; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.
• If assigned to bilingual program, candidates are required to be bilingual and biliterate in targeted language. Otherwise, bilingual and biliterate in target language preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Demonstrated ability to speak and write effectively.
• Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, business English, and spelling.
• Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment in the timely execution of delegated administrative responsibilities.
• Ability to exercise tact and cooperation in dealing with students, Board of Education personnel, contractors, and/or outside agencies and the general public.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communication with diverse populations.
• Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite-Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
• Successful completion of all required tests.
