Job Description

Main Purpose

The Production Manager is responsible for the effective operation of the plant regarding efficiencies, procedures, cost controls, quality, staffing, training and safety. Direct and supervise all aspects of product production ensuring adherence to production schedules, allocation of resources, customer needs, work procedures and cost controls. Work closely with Plant leadership and other departments to ensure effective communications to production team members on policies, changes and organizational needs.

Main Responsibilities

  • Manage and ensure effective and safe operation of production. Communicate and direct production supervision on day-to-day production needs and company KPI's to best utilize resources including equipment, materials and staff to ensure deliverables of targets as it relates to customers and other departments. Plan and make adjustments for control of costs from a labor and operational standpoint.
  • Manage, direct and ensure production adherence to all company, state and local safety procedures. Monitor, train and communicate safety practices working closely with supervisors to ensure team understanding and compliance. Work closely with EHS and team members, to ensure reporting of all accidents/incidents or near misses, assisting in investigations, follow up with safety improvements, and ensure compliance and proper practices with environmental programs. Utilize safety inspections and other reports to ensure all safety procedures, machinery, housekeeping and PPE are operational and utilized.
  • Manage and direct production supervisor on KPI's, production needs, process improvements, safety initiatives etc to ensure efficiencies, production targets and cost controls. Mentor, communicate and train supervisors in ensure production effectiveness. Develop and plan staffing flexibility to meet demands.
  • Communicate and ensure all quality standards understood and maintained. Plan and ensure all materials are effectively utilized, reducing/minimizing waste and maintaining high yields throughout process. Work closely with quality department to address and follow up with issues and continual improvements.
  • Manage and ensure equipment standards and operations are maintained correctly to minimize downtime and unnecessary repairs. Work closely with maintenance and process engineering to address and plan for needed preventative downtime as well as equipment improvements. Coordinate and ensure proper training is consistent to avoid equipment disruptions.
  • Manage and ensure that all employees have all necessary training related to job duties including safety, quality, equipment procedures, and standards of operations. Review, analyze and assess the effectiveness of ongoing training. Work with direct reports to improve and upskill staff.
  • Develop and evaluate direct reports through company performance systems and clear expectations. Set goals and metrics based on KPI's and skill sets. Mentor, coach and motivate staff through training and communication providing regular feedback identifying improvement needs. Ensure relevant on-going learning and development of all employees in lean improvement tools and communication methods.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping is completed in all areas meeting company requirements. Develop and implement systems and standards to maintain requirements for safety and equipment.
  • Develop a continuous improvement strategy in partnership with the Management Team and key business stakeholders. Recommend and implement improvements to the plant, methods, processes and systems improving quality and/or cost effectiveness. Analyze, plan and ensure effective rollout and company ROI.
  • Maintain and ensure accuracy and completion of all reporting related to production meeting deadlines.
  • Support the goals of the Lean framework (Manufacturing Process System) to ensure application with best practices.
  • Other duties as requested and required.


SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of lean manufacturing - to include continuous improvement, change management, TPM, TQM, Goal Alignment and Health and safety.
• Excellent leadership and people management skills. Experience of developing, mentoring and setting KPI's for a team of people.

EDUCATION REQUIRED
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferred in process/mechanical or chemical engineering, business management or quality assurance.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Minimum of 10+ years of successful supervisory experience of operating in a production shift environment. Preferred plastics processing in compound production or plastics extrusion production.
