Position Overview:

A custodian is responsible for making sure that a building is always kept clean. Custodians will be responsible for cleaning according to the standards set by Manchester University. This includes all areas and other miscellaneous duties to ensure all University facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and clean manner for faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Clean and service bathrooms, classrooms, study areas, kitchen areas, lounge areas, lobbies, elevators, office open areas, hallways, and stairwells
  • Keep to the cleaning schedules that are set by the supervisor
  • Re-stock materials in bathrooms and maintain the cleanliness of all dispensers so they are in proper functioning order
  • Clean and maintain floors in all buildings
  • Remove trash and maintain the cleanliness of containers
  • Open and unlock facilities on weekdays
  • Clean and maintain entrances including snow removal
  • Clean windows, glass, vents, walls and maintain a nice environment in buildings and surroundings
  • Dust in high and low places keeping within the APPA standards
  • Report work orders and complete Work orders when assigned

Secondary Job Functions

  • Maintain and complete stripping and waxing of floors
  • Maintain and complete carpet cleaning
  • Window maintenance on the outside
  • Outside trash removal
  • Complete summer deep cleaning in all buildings
  • Summertime turnover in buildings to ensure a clean and safe environment on campus
  • Check emails on a weekly basis to ensure communication requirements
  • Maintaining custodial closets with a clean and organized environment
  • Complete training when assigned
  • Launder cleaning materials
  • Carries out extra duties as instructed by the Director of Custodial

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position requiring forty hours per week and does require scheduled weekends. Potential overtime that includes all hours and weekends when required for certain circumstances.

Physical Job Descriptions

Typical Working Conditions: Moderate noise level, artificial light, dust, vibrations from scrubbers and other equipment, exposure to chemical cleaners, some allergens, outdoor elements, and work in controlled climates.

Equipment Used: Utilize all hand tools and custodial equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks, including vacuums and floor scrubbers.

Essential Physical Tasks: Walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pulling, carrying, and climbing. Maneuver stairs and ladders, grasp and make repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties; lift and push moderate to heavy amounts of weights; reach and perform overhead work; to work at a fast pace.
