ASSIGNMENT: Replacing permanent Kent School District employees when they are absent and placement in the pre-qualified hiring pool. Selected candidates can be considered for full-time or part-time positions as they develop.
These AFT positions are on-call assignments. Custodians are responsible for maintaining an assigned area and performing all necessary housekeeping and preventive maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe, and healthy environment for students, staff, and the community. Employees generally start as substitutes for absent custodians and then are considered for permanent positions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed both inside and outside the buildings and requires considerable walking sometimes on slippery surfaces at various times of the year. The work is of a manual nature and requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, stand for long periods, twist, reach, push and pull, use far and near visual acuity and lift weights from ten to fifty pounds unassisted to shoulder height. The work may cause exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes and dust.

- Must maintain an assigned area of responsibility and perform all necessary housekeeping and preventive maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe and healthy environment for students, staff and the community.
- Must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform all housekeeping and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Must be able to get along with students, staff and the public as well as be of assistance with activities in a multicultural environment.
- Must have a proven and known record of very good attendance and outstanding work performance in custodial or related duties, and must have the background and knowledge and/or education to perform the duties.
- Must possess well-developed communication skills, including evidence of effective spoken and written use of the English language.
- Must meet the physical requirements for the position; ability to lift 40-50 pounds on a regular basis; ability to climb ladders to reach roofs and attics; and able to work effectively in tight quarters.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours.
- Must be willing to perform other duties as directed by the head custodian or building administrator.
- Must have high recommendations from a reliable source and good references to be considered for an interview.
