The Salvation Army Alton IL Corps is looking for a Custodian/Driver. This individual is responsible for the general maintenance and custodial duties of the Corps building and grounds.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, $14.50 per hour.

Essential Functions

  1. Perform housekeeping duties including dusting, window washing, cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, vacuuming, spot carpet cleaning carpets, sweeping/mopping, etc.
  2. Make small or minor repairs (e.g., change furnace filters, replace light switches/ballasts; replace faucets, doorknobs, etc.) as necessary and bring major repairs to the Corps Officer's attention.
  3. Maintain Corps grounds to include yard work, trash removal, snow removal, lawn mowing and any additional outside repairs as necessary.
  4. Keep maintenance rooms clean and in order.
  5. Complete maintenance and corps furniture inventory.
  6. Prepare rooms for Corps programs, luncheons, and other meetings.
  7. Assist in transporting participants to and from activities
  8. Make pickups and deliveries as needed.
  9. Setup and run Target giveaway.
  10. Maintain confidentiality, proper boundaries with clients and comply with Salvation Army Safe From Harm guidelines.
  11. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, visitors, co-workers, and supervisor. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors, and clients; respect of others' property and person; and professional and appropriate communications to and about visitors, clients, co-workers, and supervisor.

Education and Experience

  1. A High School Diploma or GED with one-year related work experience. Combination of training and experience will be considered.
  2. Ability to read and comprehend a job description, cleaning instructions and material safety data sheet.
  3. Basic communication skills to facilitate good communications between visitors and other employees.
  4. Requires appropriate valid driver's license (MO "E" or IL "D") and must pass The Salvation Army MVR check.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

Capable of frequently lifting 30 pounds, occasionally lifting up to 100 pounds. Occasionally moves 100 pounds or more using dolly/cart/truck. Majority of lifting is from floor to waist height. Some lifting required above waist and shoulder high, but it will be at a reduced weight. Position will have to bend, stoop, crouch, stand, walk, carry and push/pull items to accomplish this job. Occasionally climb a ladder to work (replace light bulbs, etc.). Some of this work will be outdoors and it will be cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
