Job Description
DEFINITION
Piedmont Recreation Department is seeking coaches for our Middle School and Youth Sports programs. In conjunction with coaching, the role of a Middle School and Youth Sports coach is character development and providing direction to student athletes so that they may achieve a high level of appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our coaches embrace the mission and philosophy of Piedmont Middle School to support the development of the student body and the position requires thoughtful and respectful interactions with student athletes, fellow coaches, staff, parents, and other community members.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
As Rec Leader I - equivalent to the completion of the 11th grade and some experience working/volunteering in a childcare or recreation program. 17 years or age and older.
As Rec Leader II - High School graduate or GED, 2 years of experience working in a childcare or recreation program.
As Rec Specialist - Equilivant to the completion of 2 years of college. Very specialized experience for a particular program.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)
1. Follow and uphold the policies and mission statement of both Piedmont Middle School and the Piedmont Recreation Department.
2. Assist with planning, organizing, and directing Piedmont Middle School and Piedmont Recreation Department sports program.
3. Work with Sports Coordinator to plan, organize, and conduct skill assessments for team placements.
4. Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team development for players of all abilities, getting them ready for the next level of competition.
5. Facilitate pre-season, holiday break and other clinics throughout the year.
6. Ensure that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.
7. Consult with the Sports Coordinator regarding scheduling dates for camps/practices, informational parent meetings and other events throughout the season.
8. Attend informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season for all levels.
9. Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
10. Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards opposing team, fans, parents, officials, spectators, and community.
OTHER DUTIES
Attends staff development meetings and trainings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal and Sports Coordinator or other appropriated administrators.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Sports Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a sports facility setting and use equipment. Strength is needed to lift and carry recreation equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for extended periods of time; and flexibility to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. May involve significant standing, walking, pushing, bending and/or pulling to participate in recreation activities. Visual acuity sufficient to perform essential functions of the position. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in a sports facility setting with loud to moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions. Employees may interact with challenging staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Applicants should also exhibit patience, maturity, and dependability. Have good organizational skills. Possess a positive coaching philosophy, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Schedule will vary between 10-20 hours per week. Practices and games will typically be scheduled Monday-Thursday in-between 3:00pm-6:00pm (final practice and game schedule will be provided closer to season). There will be occasional weekend work as well as trainings and meetings you will be asked to attend.
COMPENSATION
As Rec Leader I - $16 - $18 per hour
As Rec Leader II - $18 - $22 per hour
As Rec Specialist - $16 - $30 depending on qualifications and experience
Part-Time, Temporary
