Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical Surgical (Med Surg) unit plays a crucial role in patient care and recovery. This position involves providing high-quality nursing care to patients suffering from a variety of medical conditions. The RN is essential in coordinating patient care, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing interventions. They serve as advocates for patients, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to promote optimal outcomes. Furthermore, RNs in the Med Surg unit often face dynamic and complex clinical situations, necessitating strong critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills. Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including physical and psychosocial components.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans based on patient assessments.
  • Administer prescribed medications and monitor patient responses.
  • Educate patients and families about health conditions, treatment plans, and post-discharge care.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Monitor vital signs and report any significant changes in patient status.
  • Assist with diagnostic tests and interpret results to provide optimal patient care.
  • Perform wound care and manage intravenous (IV) lines.
  • Document all patient interactions and care procedures accurately and timely.
  • Supervise and mentor junior nursing staff and nursing students.
  • Participate in patient rounds and contribute to team discussions regarding care strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide appropriate nursing intervention.
  • Support infection control measures and maintain a safe patient environment.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and further education opportunities.
Required Qualifications
  • Current RN license in the state of practice.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) acceptable.
  • Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a Med Surg setting.
  • Strong knowledge of medical-surgical nursing principles.
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in patient assessment techniques.
  • Familiarity with patient care technologies and equipment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Professional certification in Med Surg nursing (e.g., CMSRN) preferred.
  • Continuing education in related nursing fields highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
