Not-for-profit Accounting Manager Position

Position Overview: The Accounting Manager plays a pivotal role in handling the company's financial transactions, guiding staff through intricate or unconventional transactions. This role encompasses timely monthly and annual financial closures, in-depth financial reporting, and analytical tasks. The individual will be adept in reviewing accounts, conducting bank reconciliations, and initiating key control measures to ensure precision while mitigating risks.

Collaborating closely with the Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting, the Accounting Manager aids in assimilating new accounting standards, acting as the organization's cornerstone for accounting inquiries. Reporting directly to the Director, this role also entails leadership over a dedicated accounting team. A robust background in nonprofit revenue accounting is essential, particularly expertise in contribution accounting. With each grant having its distinctive conditions, the Accounting Manager will decipher and assign the fitting accounting treatment, steering senior accountants and others to generate precise financial statements. This role is also pivotal in formulating and instituting fresh guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including monthly and yearly closures. Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable teams and functions.
  • Direct the annual financial statement audit and aid in the creation, evaluation, and submission of IRS Forms 990.
  • Uphold transactions' adherence to GAAP and robust internal controls.
  • Act as a primary advisor on accounting and financial reporting nuances, chiefly in revenue recognition.
  • Augment and sustain finance procedures, documentation, and organization-wide training.
  • Promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Team Management Duties:
  • Participate in recruitment processes: interviewing, hiring, and training new team members.
  • Supervise the department's day-to-day operations and workflows.
  • Foster relationships with contractors and supervise their outputs.
  • Deliver constructive performance feedback and handle any necessary disciplinary actions or terminations in line with company policy.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance with a minimum of five years' related experience.
  • Proficiency in GAAP with a firm grasp on nonprofit accounting norms and regulations.
  • Proven track record in staff recruitment, development, motivation, and performance management.
  • Skilled in utilizing automated accounting systems and advanced Excel usage.
  • Outstanding attention to detail, organization, with a dedication to accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Effective communication and people skills. Adaptable and self-driven in a fast-paced work setting.
  • A genuine commitment to our company's mission and principles.
Desirable Expertise:
  • CPA certification.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint usage.
