Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor, perform routine custodial activities at an assigned campus site or facility; maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.
Key Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  • Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned campus site or facility; sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets.
  • Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways and other facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles; spot mop spills; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed.
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; wash mirrors, tile, walls and windows; unclog drains and toilets.
  • Pick up paper and other debris from campus grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to campus facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to campus building; plow snow from roads and walkways; spread ice-melt on walkways as required.
  • Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment as assigned; operate a forklift as assigned by the position; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean boards, trays and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs and floors.
  • Plant, cultivate, prune and irrigate flowers, trees, grass and shrubs as assigned by the position; pick up debris following assigned tasks.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms, gymnasiums and other facilities for special events or meetings as assigned; set up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events.
  • Lock and unlock doors, gates and windows as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set alarms as appropriate.
  • Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate personnel; report need for maintenance and repairs to appropriate authority.
  • Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. One to two years of related work experience

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge of proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work.
  • Knowledge of modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
  • Knowledge of proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to perform routine custodial activities at an assigned campus site or facility.
  • Ability to maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.
  • Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to operate a variety of custodial equipment.
  • Ability to maintain tools and equipment in clean working order.
  • Ability to move and arrange furniture and equipment.
  • Ability to observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to observe health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to meet schedules and time lines.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid California driver's license
  • Regular Attendance

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in weather extremes where significant health and safety considerations exist from physical labor

  • Requires near visual acuity to write, read directions and product labels, and to observe work in progress
  • Requires sufficient hearing and speech for ordinary, telephonic, and 2-way radio communication, to hear sound prompts from equipment and to determine if equipment is functioning properly
  • Requires manual and finger dexterity to write and to clean and make minor repairs
  • Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs on an occasional basis (1-100 times per day)
  • Twist and turn head and trunk to clean and to remove trash, move furniture and equipment
  • Requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time

SELECTION PROCESS
After the preliminary screening, selected candidates will be invited to the campus for an initial interview with the Search Committee. Videoconference interviews (in lieu of an in-person initial interview) will be offered. Candidates to be interviewed will be selected from applicants who most closely meet the minimum and desired qualifications. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview. The Search Committee will recommend finalists to the Superintendent/President for a final interview.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
