General Description

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Custodian will perform custodial duties in assigned areas and perform minor building maintenance as assigned.

This is a full-time, 12-month position assigned to the Visalia Campus.

The work schedule is:

Monday - Thursday, 3:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.

Friday, 1:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Initial salary placement is $47,382.

Job Duties

Job duties of the Custodian include:
  • Perform custodial duties in assigned areas; sweep, scrub, strip, seal, wax and polish a variety of surfaces including tile, wood floors and concrete.
  • Vacuum and shampoo rugs, carpets and upholstered furniture in offices, rooms and eating areas.
  • Clean and dust walls, furniture, woodwork and other surfaces; clean windows, door glass and drinking fountains; empty and clean waste containers.
  • Clean restrooms including floors, walls, fixtures, appliances and mirrors; restock supplies and dispensers; polish metal fixtures.
  • Perform minor building and custodial equipment maintenance; replace light globes; report need for repairs.
  • Set up and take down furniture and standard and specialized equipment for functions and special activities.
  • Lock and unlock building doors and windows.
  • Sweep walks and driveways; pick up rubbish and trash.
  • Restock supply storage areas.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:
  • Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, supplies, tools and equipment used in custodial and general maintenance work.
  • Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
  • Cleaning equipment, tools, materials and supplies used in custodial work.
Ability to:
  • Operate tools, supplies and equipment required in custodial work safely and effectively.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in District custodial work.
  • Make minor repairs to facilities and equipment.
  • Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Subject to evening and early morning hours.
Physical Abilities
  • Ability to climb a ladder.
  • Ability to bend at the waist, push, pull, twist, turn.
  • Ability to hear and speak to communicate with students/employees/public.
  • Ability to see to read documents.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended period of time.
  • Ability to reach in all directions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
Hazards
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and fumes.
