Description Summary Objective The purpose of this position is to provide practical nursing care to patients in a variety of community settings including primary care clinics, specialized clinics, homes and schools under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician or dentist. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings. Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Prepares reports and completes special projects. Requisitions equipment, materials and supplies and maintains inventories. Maintains medical records and prepares reports. Assists physicians and nurses during medical examinations and preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative procedures. Takes and records vital signs. Performs vision, hearing and other screening procedures. Administers medications and treatments, gives immunizations and performs laboratory procedures as directed by a licensed physician or registered nurse. Obtains capillary and venipuncture blood samples from clinic patients. Provides instruction to patients regarding health education and disease prevention. Consults with supervisor or registered nurse in initiating assessments. Evaluates client or family needs for referral to community resources or agencies. Plans and schedules field work and visits clients in their homes to provide routine follow-up care. Refers situations requiring further intervention to supervisor, registered nurse or physician. Inventories, monitors and controls medications and medical supplies according to established procedures. Assists with orientation of students, volunteers, aides and newly hired Licensed Practical Nurses. Performs related work as assigned. Minimum Requirements MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited one-year school of practical nursing approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing. OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Must be licensed as a Practical Nurse in the State of Kentucky. Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment. Must wear personal protective equipment as mandated by OSHA. Must work a varied schedule. Must provide one's own source of transportation. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history. MORE CENTER Must submit to, and pass, annual criminal history checks. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
