Job Summary

The Phlebotomist I supports laboratory services by performing blood draws, preparing specimens, and assisting with various assigned duties, including troubleshooting and workflow improvements.

This role is crucial for ensuring efficient specimen collection, handling, and accurate data management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws and specimen preparation, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing samples as required by test orders.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established protocols, ensuring proper labeling and maintaining sample integrity.
  • Clearly explain venipuncture or other specimen collection processes to patients to ensure a comfortable experience.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in venipuncture techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, checking all test requisitions or computer labels to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport, adhering to temperature and handling requirements specific to protocol.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend annual department training sessions.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and provide laboratory results as needed.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations as required.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (required in certain states).
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • 2-4 years of total experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling and labeling.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and team members.
  • Familiarity with lab safety protocols and infection control practices.
