1800 Massachusetts Ave, Washington, DC 20036, USA The decisions made by a Union Representative/Organizer can have profound effects on worker’s lives. As such, they are responsible for articulating the Union’s message to workers and for carrying out internal and external organizing programs of SEIU United Healthcare Workers - West, as defined by the Officers and Executive Board of the Union and division directors. The Union Representative/Organizer will also motivate and mobilize potential or existing members to protect their rights, improve the quality of their work lives, and advocate for workers' interests. Job Functions: Work with Executive Board members, shop stewards, and committee representatives to design and implement campaigns to build organizational power. Design and implement organizing campaigns to win Union recognition for unorganized workplaces. Exercise leadership, training, and motivation to build and maintain a steward system. Educate workers on power relationships and how to effectively use them. Communicate with workers, listen to their concerns, and determine when to file grievances. Organize rallies and demonstrations and provide strike support. Develop written materials including newsletters and press releases. Participate in lobbying at various governmental levels. Lead community issues and build relationships with relevant organizations. Recruit members for Political Action Committees. Represent the Union in community and labor coalition activities. Attend and participate in staff meetings. Complete all required administrative tasks in a timely manner. Maintain accurate record keeping. Other duties as assigned. Required to work long and varying hours, including weekends and holidays. Driving long distances for extended periods is required. Qualifications: Experience as a Union Representative/Organizer or proven ability to fulfill the job responsibilities. Knowledge of labor law and related issues. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build respectful relationships with diverse individuals. Dedication to workers’ rights and social justice. Effective negotiation and communication skills. Strong analytical and judgment skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Working knowledge of computer programs including Word and email. The Union Representative/Organizer must have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and a working automobile. Vehicles purchased after becoming a Union Representative/Organizer must be union-made as approved by the United Auto Workers Union. Physical Demands:
The capacity to lift up to 25 pounds is required. Relationships:
The Union Representative/Organizer works closely with Union members, unorganized workers, employers, government officials, and other organizations. Compensation:
