Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under direct supervision by a dentist, the dental assistant assists dentists in providing dental and oral health care services to patients in clinics and performs related dental and oral health care work.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide optimal, chair side, four handed-dentistry dental assistance to the dentist as needed during all patient care activities.
• Prepares patients for dental and oral health care.
• Prepares the dental operatory with the appropriate dental instruments and supplies for the dentist.
• Transfers equipment and supplies to the dentist or the dental hygienist.
• Responds to patient questions and related inquiries.
• Maintains the patient electronic record. (EPIC, Dentrix, Wisdom)
• Operates the dental machines as needed for the operation of the clinic. (Water, suction, and compressor).
• Sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instrument trays.
• Produces dental x-rays as needed for diagnosis and patient care. (Periapical and panoramic)
• Facilitates related services for health center clients as appropriate with respect to their confidentiality and privacy.
• Maintains clean, neat and orderly dental operatories at all times.'
• Provide patient with follow up appointment upon the completion of visit.
• Adheres to the proper opening and closing of the dental clinic.
• Wears a neat and clean uniform.
• Provides clerical support when staff shortages exist.
• Maintains department logbooks. (Prosthetics, sterilization, etc.)
• Prepares and packs instruments for transportation to Central Sterilization.
• Mixes amalgam, medicaments and prepares dental instruments.
• Monitors patient flow.
• Complies with HIPPA Privacy Act.
• Maintains infection control practices as well as a clean and safe work environment.
• Adheres to all local, state, and national dental practice policies and procedures.
• Disposes all dental waste in accordance to applicable statues and laws.
• Maintains regular time and attendance.
• Maintains professional development through enrollment in job specific continuing education.
• Attends department, facility and Network staff meetings.
• Supports and adheres to current local, national and corporate patient safety and harm reduction goals.
• Instruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
• Schedules appointments, generates and closes encounters, prepares bills and receives payment for dental services, completes insurance forms, and maintains clerical records.
• Orders supplies and maintains updated inventory.
• Alerts the purchasing to malfunctioning equipment.
• Calls laboratory to pick up denture cases.
• Logs in denture cases delivered to the clinic by the lab.
• Answers telephone in dental suite and takes messages while dentist is treating.
• Helps obtain "Time Out" and "Consent" of necessary patients
• Means and ability to travel between clinics.
• Performs other related duties, as assigned.
• Maintains an atmosphere of courtesy, respect, and professionalism at all times.
• Supports the Mission, Vision, and Value Statement of Gotham and NYCHHC.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 600 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; or
2. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 300 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; and 6 (six) months of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing all of the following duties: taking and uploading dental digital imaging, assisting dentist at chairside, and preparing dental instruments for sterilization; or
3. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and one (1) year of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing the duties described in "2" above; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. Each 100 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside is equivalent to two (2) months of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent.
Experience as a receptionist or clerk in a dentist's office is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.

• 8 years of related experience and/or training preferred.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.
• Interest in and conviction of purpose and aims for all programs in the clinic.
• Respect for the rights of individuals to make their own decisions about their medical care.
• Ability to communicate easily and display a cordial manner towards individuals from a variety of socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
• This job may require you to travel between clinic sites depending upon scheduling needs.

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:

KNOWLEDGEABLE IN:

Education, training, experience and knowledge of chairside dental assisting and associated dental and oral health patient care.

EQUIPMENT/MACHINES OPERATED:

Computers and associated software, intra oral cameras, electronic dental record, (Dentrix), dental radiograph equipment (periapical and panoramic), amalgamators, telephone, autoclave, ultrasonic cleaners, curing lights, dental operatories, compressor, amalgam separator, high volume suction unit, x-ray duplicator, glass bead sterilizer, dental torch and burner, model trimmer, vibrator, water bath, dental hand pieces, dental supplies and equipment, and all other supplies and equipment utilized when dental and oral health care services are rendered.

COMPUTER PROGRAMS/SOFTWARE OPERATED

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word), as well as Practice Management and Electronic Medical Record software including Dexis, EPIC, Wisdom (Dental software of EPIC) and Dentrix.
