Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Mobile Phlebotomist drives from location to location during the shift when necessary. The person in this position must be able to plan and ensure arriving at the predetermined location at a pre-set time for blood collection on Executive Health Program clients and other patients. Most blood draws will be early morning for fasting labs, but potential exists for blood draws at different times throughout the day. This position will perform standardized and specialized phlebotomy procedures on patients of all ages in a safe, accurate and professional manner. The Mobile Phlebotomist uses personal vehicle, displayed with a magnetic University of Kansas Health System sign, to travel to Health System locations, and/or a patient's home or workplace to draw blood.

When not specifically performing mobile phlebotomy duties the Mobile Phlebotomist will be assigned to an ambulatory area and will collect blood samples, receive and process samples and assist with other pre-analytical tasks.

The Mobile Phlebotomist follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards, policies and procedures and participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Must at all times, present oneself in a professional manner, adhere to Mobile Phlebotomy Dress code of navy or black matching scrubs with Kansas University Health System warm-up jacket provided by the University of Kansas Health System, and demonstrate exemplary customer service to our Executive clients.
  • Perform emergency first aid as necessary and recognize the need for patient medical assistance and call for support
  • Must ensure that mobile phlebotomy totes are equipped with in-date supplies necessary for mobile collection
  • The phlebotomists' vehicle will be clean and maintained. It will properly display a magnet tag identifying the University of Kansas Health System during working hours. During off hours the magnet tag will be removed and stored such that it is kept clean and ready for next use.
  • Must be able provide clear and accurate patient instructions for sample collection
  • Sample processing including use of portable centrifuge to ensure that specimen quality is not diminished during transport
  • When not specifically performing mobile phlebotomy duties, the phlebotomist will be assigned to an ambulatory area and will be collecting blood samples, receiving and processing samples and assisting with other pre-analytical tasks
  • Participates in teaching phlebotomy to CLS students, nursing staff and new employees
  • Provide mentoring and other training support for other employees as needed
  • Must be responsible for positive patient identification, specimen integrity and sample labeling.
  • Must adhere to hospital patient isolation precautions
  • Responsible for disposal of blood drawing equipment according to health and safety regulations prescribed in hospital policy; no waste of any type left at a patient's home or workplace. UKHS locations will have biohazard and sharps trash.
  • May perform out-patient check-in and order-entry of laboratory tests in laboratory information system (LIS) or release of appropriate laboratory tests in hospital information system (HIS).
  • Uses exemplary "concierge" customer service duties to include: work in an efficient and respectful manner for all clients; arrive promptly; make sound decisions, prioritize work; analyze complex orders, and problem solve as necessary; interact with customers and patients in a pleasant, respectful, professional and cooperative manner both in person and on the telephone at all times
  • Maintains a professional image and adheres to the dress code established for Mobile Phlebotomy of solid navy or black matching scrubs provided by the University of Kansas Health System.
  • Pre-analytical duties include sample processing and preparing specimens for transport.
  • Other tasks that may be required during periods of time when the mobile phlebotomist is not traveling include performance of quality assurance tasks, result faxing, supply ordering, and receipt of surgical samples, tissues, fluids from other departments, 24-hour urine management, and ensuring accuracy of labeling and patient ID prior to processing for transport to lab.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate
  • 1 or more years specimen collection and processing experience.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • 1 or more years Phlebotomy experience at TUKHS.

Required Licensure and Certification
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record and must be able to maintain alertness while driving long distances.

Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP) or AMT certification.

Required Language Skills
  • Fluent English - read, write, speak and understand English - must be able to communicate effectively in English.

Preferred Language Skills
  • Intermediate Spanish - speak and understand Spanish.

Knowledge Requirements
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology related to blood collection.
  • Knowledge of safety practices.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skill with laboratory information systems.
