What You'll Do:

Job Summary

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for designing and detailing large fabricated weldments and assemblies. This role requires expertise in CAD software, a strong understanding of fabrication and welding practices, and the ability to create precise and functional designs. The Mechanical Designer collaborates closely with engineering and fabrication teams to ensure designs meet Vulcan Materials standards.

Key Responsibilities
Design and Drafting:
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of large fabricated weldments, including frames, structural components, and assemblies, using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, or Fusion 360).
  • Work with engineers and fabrication teams to develop designs that meet project specifications.
  • Apply welding symbols, GD&T, and appropriate material specifications in all designs.
  • Coordinate with welders and fabricators to resolve design-related issues during production.
  • Participate in design reviews, offering practical solutions to improve designs and processes.
  • Perform basic structural calculations and analysis to ensure weldments meet load, stress, and safety requirements.

Documentation:
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, including assembly drawings, shop details, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Ensure all designs are version-controlled and compliant with company standards.

Continuous Improvement:
  • Identify and implement improvements to design processes, reducing Fabrication time and cost.
  • Stay informed on advancements in fabrication techniques, materials, and tools to enhance design quality.

Work Environment:
  • Office setting with occasional time on the shop floor or fabrication site.
  • Will require occasional travel to plant locations (20%).

Qualifications Education and Experience:
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience designing large welded structures or heavy fabrication projects.

Skills and Competencies:
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Fusion 360, Inventor, AutoCAD).
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes, materials, and fabrication techniques.
  • Familiarity with welding standards and codes.
  • High attention to detail with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
