Job Role Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner in Orthopedic Services/Trauma program works as an educator, advocate and care provider and is responsible for the care and well-being of patients followed by Orthopedic services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
• Inpatient Responsibilities
o Update/obtain consents; obtain History and physical for all scheduled out-patient orthopedic cases. Order laboratory test and medications as relevant.
o Collaborate with Orthopedic team (staff physicians and residents) for daily rounds; formulate plan of care; and facilitate patient discharge.
o Serve as point of contact for nursing staff, physical and occupational therapy, and ancillary staff for the Orthopedic team.
o Collaborate with other services, such as medicine, infectious diseases, surgery, trauma, etc.
o Assist staff in clinics with daily throughput seeing new orthopedic patients and surgical follow up patients.
o Point of contact for Orthopedic clinic staff
o Assist with casting, splinting, bracing and dressing changes as needed.
o Manage medication refills for Orthopedic service.
• Outpatient Responsibilities
o Provide clinic coverage when Orthopedic staff physicians are out of the office.
o Generate RVUs for Advanced Practice Provider (APP) and physician clinics by carrying out injections and minor procedures, seeing new patients and admissions from clinic.
o See patients daily in staffed clinics
o Complete surgical prep for cases in both staff and APP clinics
o Assist with completion of FMLA/disability paperwork for patients.
o Manage prescription refills.
o Assist with scheduling triage, facilitation of appointments, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic test and laboratory tests as needed.
• Orient/onboard new APP providers for Orthopedic service
• Order appropriate medications for patients with upcoming joint replacement surgery.
• Precept BSN and APRN students.

Minimum Qualifications, Training, and Experience
• Expertise in the practice of nursing of current clinical practice including experience in the area of specialty practice.
• Able to complete the following procedural skills and care management:
o 12 lead EKG interpretation
o Spirometry and peek flow assessment
• Laceration repair and suturing
• Superficial abscess incision and drainage
• Cast/splint application
• Other procedures as required.
o Maintain credentialing for the following privileges:
• Chest x-ray review
• Compartment pressure measurement and monitoring
• External fixator removal
• Fracture reduction
• Hematoma blocks
• Joint aspiration
• Joint injections - intraarticular block/ therapeutic joint injection
• Soft tissue injections - tendon sheaths, ligaments, trigger points, ganglion cysts, bursae
• Superficial hardware removal
• Surgical drain removal
• Taping and bracing (foot/ankle)
• Traction pin insertion
• Wound care
• Wound packing
o Specialty certification if available
