Onto Innovation
Staff Optical Engineer
Onto Innovation, Milpitas, California, United States, 95035
Onto Innovation is a leader in process control, combining global scale with an expanded portfolio of leading-edge technologies that include: 3D metrology spanning the chip from nanometer-scale transistors to micron-level die-interconnects; macro defect inspection of wafers and packages; metal interconnect composition; factory analytics; and lithography for advanced semiconductor packaging. Our breadth of offerings across the entire semiconductor value chain helps our customers solve their most difficult yield, device performance, quality, and reliability issues. Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers’ critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
Working with multiple functional groups, support the manufacture of complex ellipsometer- and reflectometer-based semiconductor metrology systems throughout the product lifecycle:
With a thorough understanding of Systems Requirements Documents, apply Design-for-Manufacture and Design-for-Test principles in support of New Product Introduction to ensure products can be built in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Work with design engineers and suppliers to ensure that optical components are appropriately specified to meet system performance requirements. Define and locate alternatives and second sources for critical items.
Develop test equipment and processes to verify incoming components and subassemblies meet specifications. Generate and release new technical documentation such as specifications, test reports, and operations methods sheets into the Change Management system.
Develop Best Methods for handling and testing optical components and building and qualifying optical systems. Provide initial and ongoing training for same to other team members.
Troubleshoot manufacturing issues, drive to root cause, and provide solutions for short-term containment and long-term prevention.
Develop comprehensive project plans outlining scope, timeline, resources, and milestones.
Track project progress, identify risks, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
Optimize optical systems (lenses, mirrors, lasers, etc.) and develop efficiencies in test and assembly processes to reduce cycle-time and cost while improving system performance.
Document changes to existing materials and processes and release them through the Change Management system. Review Change Orders submitted by others to ensure first-time-right.
As the Subject Matter Expert, provide technical support to other parts of the organization during escalations in the factory or field.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (PhD is a plus) in Optical Engineering, or degree in related Science/Engineering with a minimum of 7 years of related experience.
Hands-on experience with optical testing and calibration for precision measurements.
Experience with Opto-mechanical systems, optical alignment, and integration of systems in high-precision manufacturing environments. Direct experience with ellipsometry and reflectometry is preferred.
History of working within cross-functional teams in a fast-paced and highly-matrixed environment.
Ability to communicate complex technical information across disciplinary boundaries and at differing levels of experience and understanding.
Capable of planning and prioritizing without complete knowledge and comfortable dealing with ambiguity.
Demonstrated history of delivering results.
