As a Phlebotomist, you will perform skin puncture, venipuncture, arterial punctures, verify correct patient identification, and proper specimen collection, you may centrifuge and process specimens, package, and store specimens to be sent to another laboratory for testing. In addition, you are responsible for receiving clients, answering and directing telephone calls and mail. As a Phlebotomist, you will also enter Physician orders and retrieve test results from the Laboratory Information System (LIS), file reports and maintain patient logs. You may also assist Medical Technologists with other duties as allowed by regulation.
This is a Per Diem position, working variable hours and days a week.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Collects the correct sample type on patients using venipuncture, arterial puncture, heel stick or capillary puncture techniques.
- Receives/processes specimens from clients.
- Inventories and orders supplies as needed, checks expiration dates and submits requisitions for supply orders.
- Prepares and/or updates phlebotomy procedures annually and has them appropriately reviewed.
- Rotates among the different Samaritan Healthcare facilities as needed. These rotations may include a temporary change in shift or hours worked.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
- Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
- Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures as well as labor agreements.
- Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
- Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
- Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Certificate of completion of coursework from an accredited Phlebotomy education program preferred, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
- Must obtain Washington State Medical Assistant Phlebotomist Certification within 3 months of hire.
- Minimum of one (1) year hospital experience preferred.
- Experience with computers (MS Word, Excel) and EPIC LIS program preferred
- Current CPR certification – Healthcare Provider (HCP) level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Occasional standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling.
- Excessive bending over.
- Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
