The Phlebotomist will be responsible for drawing blood from patients or blood donors of all ages, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience. This role involves explaining procedures to patients to help alleviate any anxiety, verifying patient or donor identities, and maintaining accurate records of all blood collection activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws on patients or blood donors of all ages.
- Explain the blood draw process to patients and donors, ensuring they are informed and relaxed, especially those who may be nervous or anxious.
- Verify the identity of patients or donors using proper identification protocols to ensure accuracy.
- Collect, label, and process blood samples according to safety and procedural standards.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment by following infection control practices and proper equipment sanitization.
- Manage patient or donor records, ensuring that all information is accurate and confidential, in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Assist with inventory management of phlebotomy supplies and equipment.
- Monitor patients during and after the blood draw, ensuring they are comfortable and responding appropriately.
- Handle and transport blood samples to the appropriate laboratory or testing facility in a timely and accurate manner.
- Provide excellent customer service, offering support and answering questions for patients or donors.
- Follow all healthcare protocols and safety guidelines to prevent exposure to infectious diseases and maintain a safe working environment.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a formal Phlebotomy training program.
- Current certification as a Phlebotomist (e.g., Phlebotomy Technician, CPT).
- Strong knowledge of venipuncture and capillary blood collection techniques.
- Ability to interact with patients of all ages in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Excellent attention to detail, ensuring the accuracy of blood collection and labeling.
- Strong communication skills to explain procedures and alleviate patient or donor anxiety.
- Ability to follow strict protocols and maintain a high standard of care.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Phlebotomist, especially in a clinical or hospital setting.
- Familiarity with blood collection technologies and laboratory processing systems.
- Bilingual skills (preferred but not required) to assist a broader range of patients.
Certifications (if any)
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent certification.
- CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification preferred but not required.
Education: High School
