Oversee the systems and processes that generate information, primarily financial in nature, for the purpose of assisting CFO to execute on accounting and reporting. The Accounting Manager position has a broad scope of responsibilities, making this role a unique opportunity to participate in virtually all financial processes. This role requires solid accounting competency along with strong people skills and integrity. The position requires the ability to multi-task, manage stress, be detailed, accurate, organized, and possess strong computer, communication and interpersonal skills. The Accounting Manager will support all policies, goals and objectives of the company, and will represent the company in a knowledgeable and professional manner. All of the Accounting Manager’s responsibilities outlined below are performed under the direction of the CFO.

Job Responsibilities

Accounting

  • Ensure accurate, timely, and complete financial reporting in conformity with GAAP. Responsible for monthly reporting including balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement, variance report, forecast, and other operational and performance reports. Oversee the preparation of supporting schedules and working papers related to these reports.
  • Reviews and approves journal entries and associated supporting documentation.
  • Reviews reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts and follows up on any discrepancies.
  • Responsible for the administration and maintenance of accounting software.
  • As needed, assists other departments with their financial software (e.g., commodity and maintenance software systems)
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in accounting processes and the use of accounting software.
  • Ensure the timeliness and accuracy of all accounting processes including Payables, Receivables, Inventory, Hedging/Commodity, Debt, etc.
  • Liaison between CFO and other managers to resolve accounting issues.
  • Maintains chart of accounts and chart of accounts mapping under the direction of the CFO.
  • Executes on month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close procedures. Demonstrates ownership of and ensures availability during these close processes.
  • Oversee monthly tax reporting (sales & use tax and motor fuels tax)

Reporting

  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual, and other financial reports (yield analysis, production report, CEO key metrics, distillers sales report)
  • Prepares monthly reports for lenders.
  • Prepares quarterly financial statements for investors. Prepares quarterly audit committee reports.
  • Prepares and submits quarterly benchmarking reports for CFO’s review.
  • Drives the year-end audit process and assists with the preparation of the annual financial statements including the notes to the financials.
  • Prepares information for year-end income tax filings under the direction of the CFO.
  • Lead variance reporting: investigate significant differences and provide clear, fact-based explanations. Work with other departments to determine the root cause of variances.
  • Assists with initiatives to control and reduce costs including opportunities to minimize company and investor tax obligations.
  • Maintain an external benchmarking tool, which includes industry specific financial and operational metrics. Analyze and interpret the benchmarking results. Participate in initiatives to improve benchmarking results.
  • Assists the CFO with annual budget and quarterly forecasts.

Cash processes (disbursements & receipts)

  • Reviews all disbursements and receipts, including the “3-way match” between purchase orders, invoices, and receipts.
  • Liaison between purchasing agent, managers, and vendors in the resolution of disbursement inquiries and issues
  • Reviews daily, weekly, and semi-monthly deposits.
  • Reviews and approves credit applications.
  • Communicates with banks and provides information in a timely manner.

Internal controls

  • Safeguards financial assets by following internal controls and recommending improvements in internal controls.
  • Assists with the development and documentation of systems for the accurate recording of financial records.
  • Spots errors and suggests ways to improve internal controls.
  • Assist the CFO with internal audits.

Other

  • Manage accounting staff (2 accountants)
  • Ability to perform in a “small” company environment described as follows. No task is too insignificant that it would be “beneath” the employee to execute on it. Conversely, no task is too big to prevent the employee from rising to the occasion and executing.
  • Obtains cross training and serves as the backup for other positions. In the absence of accounting staff (e.g. out of office), assists with accountant duties.
  • Identify aspects of systems and processes that can be improved, made more efficient, or made more effective.
  • Leads Board of Directors relations process including correspondence, meeting preparation, and compensation
  • Obtains familiarity with financial impact of lender agreements (e.g., interest rates, fees, financial covenants, etc.)
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies.
  • Participate in leadership and other training under the direction of the CFO.
  • Manage the IT function, including the relationship with the Company’s Information Technology service provider.
  • Supports company-wide safety program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Information Systems

  • Excellent computer skills including typing and data entry, necessary to perform the duties required for this job.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Office, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical and modeling skills; ability to develop complex accounting schedules and financial models.
  • Must have experience with ERP software and reporting tools. Knowledge of Great Plains and Management Reporter is a plus.
  • Ability to stay up to date on information technology affecting job duties.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in accounting with at least 7 years applicable work experience. Adequate accounting experience to meet the job requirements is required. In-depth knowledge of general accounting principles required. CPA or CMA preferred.
