Acción Latina is a legacy arts and media organization and the nonprofit publisher of El Tecolote, California's longest-running and award-winning bilingual newspaper founded in 1970. Acción Latina is dedicated to promoting community media, cultural arts and civic engagement to build healthy, empowered Latino communities. Acción Latina is an anchor organization in San Francisco’s Mission District, with ties to many community newspapers and deep partnerships with many art and education institutions.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Acción Latina seeks a visionary Executive Director, who is bilingual, bicultural, and committed to social justice. The successful candidate must have community media experience and be committed to storytelling through cultural arts programming. They will be charged with effectively strengthening the organization’s award-winning newspaper, its alliances with other community media partners, its cultural arts programs, and with increasing its revenue to meet the dramatic challenges facing our Latinx/e/o/a audience.
The Executive Director’s leadership, fundraising, budgeting expertise, and community insights will build on our current success and infrastructure development. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for organizational management, financial health, and advancing the nonprofit’s mission across media, arts, and community engagement platforms.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Mission, Vision & Strategy
- Actively engage the Board and Program Directors to develop and execute strategic plans focused on revenue diversification, community needs, and community impact
- Foster a collaborative and transparent culture of growth and innovation, internally and in the community, to ensure that programs remain relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the Latinx/e/o/a community
- Drive symbiotic growth of Accion Latina’s arts and media programs with a focus on growing El Tecolote’s readership
Leadership & Management
- Support and empower department programs, with thoughtful leadership that is inclusive and transparent to lead program excellence by fostering a collaborative working environment, encouraging professional development, with a track record of effective delegation skills
- Collaborate and support Program Directors to deliver impactful programs that reflect the Latinx/e/o/a community’s needs and cultural heritage within approved budgets
- Recruit, train, and develop a diverse team, building an inclusive environment that supports professional growth and aligns with the organization’s mission
- Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, program evaluation, and maintaining systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
- Actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, donors, and community partners, as well as cultivating relationships to enhance El Tecolote’s visibility and support
Resource Development & Revenue Strategy
- Develop and execute a robust fundraising plan, to align with annual financial targets, by diversifying income streams through digital initiatives, sponsorships, major donor cultivation, grant writing, partnerships, events, and earned revenue opportunities
- Embed financial goals across all departments and events
- Serve as the organization’s primary grant writer for government and private foundations and manage contract grant writers
- Cultivate major donors aimed at expanding Accion Latina’s funding portfolio to support its programs
Budget and Financial Management
- Ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency through oversight, accounting, and reporting
- Timely engage Program Directors in budget development for board review and approval of the overall annual budget
- Ensure restricted funds are used only for their designated purposes and establish and utilize a system for timely grant compliance and reporting
- Present accurate monthly financial reports to the Board that provide clear updates on financial health and long-term sustainability
- Work with the accounting and Board Finance Committee to maintain compliance with financial policies, reporting and tax requirements that ensure alignment with strategic objectives
- Ensure that facilities, furniture, communications services, utilities, and equipment are properly maintained and meet the basic needs of the organization
Community Engagement & Program Development
- Meet with Program Directors and work collaboratively to deliver impactful programs that reflect the Latinx/e/o/a community’s needs and cultural heritage
- Build partnerships that increase Accion Latina’s community visibility and leverage relationships with local organizations, funders, and media
- Expand our growing digital news and impact channels by working closely with the Editor In Chief
Governance
- Reports to and serves at the direction of the Board, while serving as a resource to the Board
- Keep the Board informed of significant issues affecting programs and services, so policy decisions are made on a timely and informed basis
- Oversee development and implementation of orientation for in-coming Board members
- Serve as staff on Board Committees
- Attend monthly regular Board meetings and provide an Executive Director report
Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community media, and cultural arts, with direct experience and a passion for working with Latinx/e/o/a communities
- Proven record of accomplishment in nonprofit leadership with a strong emphasis on fundraising, grant writing, revenue strategy, and budgeting
- Fiscal management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, with a strategic approach to organizational sustainability
- Effective communication and leadership skills that empower staff to carry out their responsibilities effectively
- Ensure employment law compliance, payroll, and oversee implementation of health benefits
- Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholders
- Experience working with a Board of Directors, fostering positive board relationships, and aligning organizational goals with board support
- Bilingual/bicultural (English/Spanish) preferred
- Minimum of 3 years is preferred in nonprofit leadership, with experience in fundraising, digital strategy, or program management
SALARY & BENEFITS
The salary range is $70,000 to $80,000, commensurate with experience. This full-time position includes health benefits, 13 paid holidays, accrued sick time and up to 15 days of accrued paid time off with an additional 10 days of holiday paid time off provided by the organization in December and additional opportunities for professional development.
SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday and limited evenings and weekends, in person with the flexibility to work remotely occasionally
TRAVEL: Occasional travel to local and out of state conferences and convenings
