Description
Plans, assigns, supervises and reviews a variety of complex legal clerical and technical legal work in a law office; may perform difficult and complex technical legal work; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Supervising Law Technician is distinguished from the Law Technician II in that the Supervising Law Technician is responsible for planning and coordinating the legal clerical and technical legal work activities of a major segment of a law office; whereas, the Law Technician II performs difficult and complex technical legal work and supervises lower level Law Technicians and other lower level clerical staff.

Plans, organizes and supervises a variety of legal clerical and technical legal work activities of a major division in a law office; supervises the establishment and maintenance of a variety of files and records; sets up procedure s to control incoming and outgoing materials and pending completed work; revises work procedures and implements operational policies for greater efficiency and coordination between various functional units; determines priorities and assigns and reviews the work of subordinates; works closely with the courts and other agencies in setting up overall procedures for the division; researches files and documents in more complex matters and assists attorneys and subordinates in preparing pleadings and other documents as may be required; screens calls and visitors, provides information, makes appointments for attorneys; maintains statistical data and compiles and prepare s a variety of reports; assists in controlling security of the department's computer systems and state tracking and other law enforcement tracking systems; participate s in employment interviews for legal clerical and technical staff; trains new employees; advises subordinates in work and office procedures; conducts performance evaluations and counsels employees; recommends personnel actions; compiles budget estimates for the division and supervises maintenance of inventory of supplies; assists in the internal management of the legal office as required; may take and transcribe dictation.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience as a Law Technician II or six years of progressively complex work experience in a legal or judicial environment involving the examination of legal documents for adherence to law, policies, procedures and the rules of court, one of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity, and shall have included or be supplemented by one year of experience involving legal research, drafting and checking of legal documents and forms, and other paralegal tasks.
License Requirement: None
Knowledge of: principles and practice s of supervision; basic constitutional, property, tort, criminal, and administrative law; the commercial code and contracts; types of court actions and the various court rules and procedures; methods and techniques of legal research and sources of legal information; law office practices and procedures; legal writing; interviewing techniques.
Ability to: plan, direct and coordinate the work of a clerical staff; read, write, analyze and apply the law; understand the legal process; prepare, process and maintain legal records, forms and documents; conduct research; compile, summarize and digest materials; draft documents; prepare reports; deal effectively with employees and the public; type at a rate of 40 words per minute; as applicable to specific positions, take dictation at 80 words per minute and transcribe notes accurately.
