The DHHS Behavioral Health branch has approximately 10 buildings including an inpatient psychiatric health facility. This position serves patient, staff, and building custodial needs. It is a full-time, 40 hour per week position.

What You'll Do:
This position is responsible for a variety of duties, including;
  • Cleaning and disinfecting restrooms, showers, patient rooms, offices, etc.
  • Performing minor maintenance tasks such as unclogging toilets, replacing dispensers, and changing lightbulbs.
  • Stripping and waxing floors as well as vacuum and shampoo carpets.
Where You'll Do It:
This position is located at 720 Wood Street., Eureka, CA.

A typical schedule for this position is Monday through Friday 5am-1:30pm with half hour lunch (schedule may change after initial training period). The schedule will include holidays.

Under general supervision, performs routine custodial and cleaning duties at the Mental Health Branch of the Department of Health and Human Services; performs basic maintenance work in buildings and adjacent grounds; performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a working level class, performing a variety of custodial duties in group and individual patient settings, clinics, administrative offices and reception area. This class is distinguished from the custodial and building maintenance classes in that these classes perform cleaning and minor repair duties in County public building and office facilities, whereas the Mental Health Maintenance Custodian class is uniquely assigned to the Mental Health Branch of the Department of Health and Human Services.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Dusts, sweeps and mops floors of all public, staff and patient areas.
  • Dusts furniture, vacuums carpeted areas, shampoos carpet as needed.
  • Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
  • Empties and cleans ash trays.
  • Scrubs counters, floors, walls, appliances and dining area.
  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms and showers; restocks supplies as necessary.
  • Washes inside windows, counters, tables and light fixtures.
  • Strips and waxes kitchen and other floors as required.
  • Performs minor building maintenance such as repairing faucets, urinals and plumbing valves, changing light bulbs, painting and patching plaster.
  • Maintains basic logs or records of work performed.
  • Reports the need for maintenance or any safety and patient hazards as noted.
  • Follows label instructions to mix and dilute cleansers, disinfectants and stripping agents.
  • Uses a variety of custodian tools and supplies; orders supplies and maintains equipment and storage area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Closes windows, turns off lights, and locks doors to secure buildings.
  • Sets up meeting rooms, moves furniture and equipment and may make minor repairs.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  • Proper cleaning methods and the safe use and storage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, supplies and equipment.
  • Use and minor maintenance of equipment used in housekeeping or custodial work.
  • Safety practices and procedures related to the work, including precautions to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Techniques for dealing with mentally ill patients from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Basic arithmetic.


Skill in:
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Safely using cleaning materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Performing routine custodial and general maintenance and repair work.
  • Maintaining accurate basic records.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Other Requirements:
  • Must routinely stand and walk for extended periods, and walk and maneuver equipment weighing up to forty pounds.
  • Must be able to work evening and weekend shifts and overtime as necessary.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.
Desirable Education and Experience:
  • A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is: Six months of experience in custodial or housekeeping experience.
  • Housekeeping in an institutional setting, particularly in a health-related setting, is desirable.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

RETIREMENT
The County of Humboldt participates in the CalPERS retirement system, with both the County and the employee making contributions toward the employee's retirement.

CalPERS Retirement Program: Employees fall into one of the following tiers based on the date you first start working for the County or any other employer that uses CalPERS for retirement.
  • Tier I - Prior to 7/5/2012: 2.7% @ 55
  • Tier II - Post 7/6/2012: 2% @ 55
  • Tier III - Post 1/1/2013: 2% @ 62
If this is your first job with a CalPERS employer, you would be in Tier III.
  • 2% means that for every year you work for the County, you will receive 2% of your maximum annual pay rate for every year that you work for us (or other CalPERS employers) if you work the required minimum number of years (that's called vesting) and retire after the age following the @.
  • For example, if you work 20 years and retire at 62 years of age, you will receive 20 x 2% or 40% of your maximum annual pay rate every year in retirement payments.

    VACATION
