The Lansing Board of Water & Light has openings for an Engineer I - V with our Electric Systems Integrity Department located in Lansing, MI.

Job Type: Full-Time

Starting Salary Range: $66,927. - $140,425.

Position Summary:
Primary roles in the Electric Transmission and Distribution Engineering department include T&D Engineering Design, T&D System Planning, T&D Standards and Materials, and Transmission System Protection and Regulatory Compliance. Distribution design experience: Designing and calculating the sizing and placement of transformers, utility poles, conductors, guying, permits, easements, fusing, manholes, conduit, primary metering, switchgear, etc....

Responsible for engineering activities related to planning, designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and ensuring regulatory compliance of the electric transmission and distribution systems. Most projects will involve some or all the following activities: investigations, studies, estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, system protection, designing, drawing development and review, construction and commissioning support, training, and project management.

Job Specifications:
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relevant electric transmission or distribution experience; or equivalent related experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally.
  • Proficient knowledge of Office 365.
  • Predictable and reliable work schedule.
  • Comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Ability to respond to emergent or unexpected events within the BWL service territory.
  • Ability to effectively work in remote and open-office environments.
  • Michigan driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Addition Requirements based on level:

Engineer I Starting Salary Range: $66,927. - $79,643.

Job Specifications:
  • Acquires limited knowledge and develops basic skills; Develops an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities
  • Applies prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks; Performs standard computations or analysis.
  • Performs routine technical work which does not require previous experience
Essential Functions:

Required:
  • Candidates within nine (9) months of completing their Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree will be considered.
Engineer II Starting Salary Range: $82,628. - $99,938.

Job Specifications:
  • Mastery of all principal duties and responsibilities thru Engineer I
  • Acquires basic knowledge and develops basic skills in specific practice areas
  • Applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment
  • Exercises limited judgement on details of work and in application of standard methods for conventional work
  • Performs basic design/planning/analysis tasks

  • Assigns tasks to and coordinate with technicians or administrative staff

Engineer III Starting Salary Range: $91,746. - $111,930.

Job Specifications:
  • Mastery of all principal duties and responsibilities thru Engineer II
  • Develops broad knowledge and skills in a specific practice area; Works on small projects or portions of larger projects; Performs moderate design/planning/analysis tasks
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional design/planning/analysis projects with few complex features.
  • Collaboratively uses judgement to determine adaptations in methods for nonroutine aspects of assignments
  • Prepares portions of, or entire, technical documents. Edits technical documents such as plans, applications, reports, specifications, etc. Performs research and investigations

Engineer IV Starting Salary Range: $101,876. - $125,358.

Job Specifications:
  • Mastery of all principal duties and responsibilities thru Engineer III
  • Applies broad knowledge of principles and practices in specific practice area.
  • Independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Designs a complete project, system, component, or process or creates complete plans, studies, or analysis; Works on multiple projects/tasks of moderate size or portions of major projects; Prepares and edits complete technical documents; Designs and conducts experiments, and analyzes and interprets data; Identifies and formulates solutions to problems
  • Assigns tasks to and directs engineers, technicians, and administrative staff.
  • Plans and coordinates detailed aspects of the engineering work; Prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
  • Assists with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or programs.
  • Works cooperatively with others to accomplish team goals and organizational objectives
  • Assigns work to others in order to maximize time for strategic thinking and actions. Provides clear guidelines, monitors, redirects and sets limits as needed. Provides challenging assignments, shares authority, and provides resources and support.

  • Uses advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices of sciences and disciplines to complete assignments

Essential Functions:

Required:
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License (Registered in State of Michigan)
  • Relevant electric transmission or distribution experience; or equivalent related experience. (Typically, Ten or more years)
  • Proficient knowledge of applicable codes and standards
  • Experience with managing complex projects
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for much of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer, and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
