Reporting to theChief HR Officer for the UNC System Office, the Team Lead will do the followingin collaboration with internal stakeholders:
- Be the go-to resource: Provide expert guidance to managers and employees, addressing workplace concerns and fostering open, effective communication.
- Lead and mentor: Inspire and develop a team of two HR Business Partners, equipping them to navigate complex employee and team matters with confidence and care.
- Promote workplace harmony: Manage performance and employee relations issues, resolving conflicts and fostering a culture of respect, belonging, and growth.
- Ensure compliance: Uphold federal and state employment laws and regulations, embedding best practices into daily HR operations.
- Support employee success: Develop and implement HR programs that prioritize employee well-being and align with organizational goals.
- Strengthen relationships: Build trusted partnerships across the organization to understand employee needs and deliver tailored HR solutions.
- Continuously improve: Analyze workplace trends, identify opportunities for improvement, and innovate HR processes to enhance the employee experience.
About the UNC System OfficeThe UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.
About the Team
The Office of the Chief Operating Officer (COO), reporting directly to the President of the University, is responsible for overseeing internal and campus-focused operational priorities, including leadership and coordination of key teams such as Human Resources, IT, Enterprise Data, Project Management, Advancement Shared Services, HR Shared Services, Workforce Policy, and Operational Strategy. These divisions support both the UNC system office's internal operations and provide strategic leadership across campus. The COO's office advises the President, fosters relationships on his behalf, and engages with Chancellors to further the President's strategic priorities, ensuring alignment between operational practices and institutional goals while driving efficiency and innovation throughout the University.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Graduation from a four-year college or university and at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required CompetenciesStrong knowledge of HR principles, employment laws, and compliance.
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to effectively convey information through presentations, reports, and written communications.
Proficiency in using HR metrics, data analysis, and Generative AI to inform decisions.
Skilled in managing multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic, public-sector setting.
Experience with enterprise HR systems (e.g., SAP/PeopleSoft, Kronos) and talent management platforms (e.g., Cornerstone, PeopleAdmin).
Proficient with technology, including HR systems, spreadsheets, databases, and Office 365 Suite.
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills- Experience in higher education, especially within the UNC System, with expertise in HR systems, employee relations, and performance management.
- Proven ability to support multiple departments or units while maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating a thorough understanding of UNC policies and procedures for SHRA and EHRA positions.
