Mechanical Design Engineer, Sealing

As a Dynamic Seal Engineer you'll be working with some of the industry's brightest minds and have engineering ownership of complete sealing systems for Tesla vehicles. Your work will focus on the dynamic seals for existing and future programs for improved quality, cost reduction, and manufacturing improvements. Engineering and design of dynamic seals for future vehicles will also be within the scope of work. Your ownership of seals will include initiation and oversight of virtual (CAE) and non-virtual testing and analysis to prove new designs from concept until production. Ownership of closures dynamic seals offers a great opportunity to interface with all aspects of the vehicle. In this position you'll work closely with body, closures, electrical/firmware, exterior trim, interior trim, as well as manufacturing engineering, to establish world class seal designs and world class assembly processes utilizing those designs.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the Vehicle Engineering Team to support closure system dynamic sealing development for the Tesla vehicle product line
- Fully specifying elastomeric seals designs through creation of specification drawings
- Initiating seal CAE studies, interpreting results, and iterating until geometry and materials meet design targets
- Material selection for elastomeric dynamic and static seals
- Manufacturing processes utilized to produce elastomeric seals and seal assemblies.
- Support the creation of component specifications, component DFMEA, and other technical design documents
- Analyze concepts through both simulation and physical prototype builds
- Help deliver world-class craftsmanship, fit/finish and support for successful production launch
- Innovate, develop, and improve designs and processes continuously.
- A Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- 3 years working on the design and engineering of dynamic seals
- Strong understanding of GD&T
- Ability to interpret FEA results and integrate recommendations into product designs.
- Ability to design new and improved seals within an existing environment using design software
- Use of CAD software to design 2D sections and 3D geometry of seals. Designing complex seal molds using design software (2D and 3D design) is a plus
- Past ownership of seal designs from concept (improvement of existing or new) through production
- Past work with a seal supply chain partner in the development of new seal designs
- CATIA V5/V6 software for 2D section and 3D geometry is a plus

$104,000 - $174,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
