About the Job

Essential Functions:

Assists Clinicians, clients and patients with receiving, assessment, work-up, discharge, etc., prepares patients for a variety of veterinary medical procedures including preparation for specialty care treatments and services, radiographic procedures, catherizations, venipunctures, vaccinations, anesthesia, administration of medications and treatments, etc. With oversight by a DVM, applies clinical job knowledge and competence to diagnosis, treatment, and care. Interpersonal Skills:

Employee clearly communicates (speaks and listens/responds) to other staff, coworkers and supervisor. Employee is supportive of coworkers to accomplish tasks efficiently. Employee has a positive attitude. Employee uses time efficiently/utilizes down time efficiently: takes initiative to take care of departmental needs (including helping other areas of the hospital). Work constructively as a team member. Job requirements: Technical Duties:

You work for the Veterinary Medical Center and are assigned to Small Animal specialties. Responsible to ensure that all services and supplies are charged for according to hospital fee schedule. Answers questions and explains or demonstrates procedures and equipment for interns, senior veterinary students, and student technicians. Assist with technical procedures. Receiving:

Client greeting and receiving. Collect patient history, perform physical examination, and sample collection. Animal cage assignment and set up. Assist with in-hospital patient care. Assist Clinicians and staff to assure efficient service and to provide good customer service. Client/RDVM Communication:

Answer incoming phone calls from clients and RDVMs. Liaison between internal and external customers and clinicians. Float coverage:

Work as a team member to assure all members receive a lunch break. Assist clinicians, residents, interns, and students. Participates with inventory maintenance. Other Functions:

Assists in other service areas; develops skills that are cross-functional and uses time efficiently including helping other areas of the hospital. Maintains a clean environment in hospital area and ensures that these areas are adequately ordered, stocked and that equipment is in working order. Participates in daily rounds. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician, or Director. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Veterinary Technician - Graduate of Veterinary Technician or equivalent program, certified or certification eligible as MVMA/MAVT technician. Senior Veterinary Technician - Graduate of Veterinary Technician or equivalent program, certified as MVMA/MAVT technician, plus at least one year of experience. Preferred Qualifications/Selection Criteria: Problem solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology, willingness to be flexible to meet patient care needs, knowledge of proper restraint and handling of large and small animals. Certified technician with certification recognized in Minnesota. About the Department

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine. The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital for dogs, cats, and other companion animals, the Piper Clinic at the new Leatherdale Equine Center, for horses, and the Large Animal Hospital, which treats farm animals, and occasionally, zoo animals.
