As a senior individual contributor in the Labour Relations department, you will provide well-developed interpretation and advice to HR professionals and operational leaders in Covenant Health on a wide range of labour relations matters. You will regularly consult on complex workplace investigations and grievances, as well as provide leadership in managing files through the arbitration process or through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. You will take on key roles in collective bargaining at some of our 13 tables, including acting as a lead negotiator, as well as work in support of the organization’s essential services planning/negotiations. Please note: Travel is required and may include the use of a personal vehicle. A standard driver’s abstract may also be required for use of corporate lease vehicles.
Description:
Provides well-developed interpretation and advice regarding all collective agreements, employment legislation, etc. Provides guidance to HR colleagues on workplace investigations, performance management, discipline, grievances and arbitrations. Works within the LR department and with HR colleagues to develop strategies and processes to effectively and efficiently resolve labour relations issues. Keeps abreast of mediations, grievances, disciplinary actions, severances and arbitrations within Covenant Health, and beyond, as applicable (e.g.: pertinent arbitration decisions in health care). Contributes to the development and Implementation of Covenant Health policies and processes. Participates in strategy development for arbitration cases and dispute resolution processes and represents the interests of the organization at arbitration hearings. Ensures that all parties are briefed appropriately and required information is compiled for arbitration. Assists in the thorough preparation of Covenant Health leaders and witnesses. Supports or leads collective bargaining tables. Identifies trends and underlying issues; conducts labour relations research. Drafts proposals for bargaining. Participates in collective agreement implementation. Presents substantive changes to the organization. Negotiates grievances resolution, Letters of Understanding and Transition Agreements with the union; coordinates internal teams to implement same. Provides support to the organization’s essential services work. This position is non-unionized. Classification:

Completion of Baccalaureate degree in a Business or related discipline. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible professional HR/LR experience in a heavily unionized environment, preferably healthcare. Minimum two (2) years of these at a Senior Advisor level preferred. Participation in bargaining preferred. Additional Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of collective agreements, employment legislation and caselaw, and related concepts (e.g., Employment Standards, Human Rights, Duty to Accommodate, Essential Services, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP), etc.). Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and listening skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in a co-operative, respectful, and sensitive manner with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including all levels of the organization. Discretion, diplomacy and tact are essential, as are strategic, analytical, and creative thinking skills. Strong commitment to participation within a collaborative team environment. Skilled at working in a fast-paced and demanding environment. Ability to identify inconsistencies and discrepancies that are not obvious. Computer literacy including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Outlook and the Internet. Understanding and commitment to Covenant mission, vision, and values.
