Position Summary mophie is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Engineering to oversee both the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering development function, managing teams across the U.S. and China. The Director of Engineering will play a key leadership role in driving product innovation, ensuring high-quality designs, and coordinating cross-functional engineering activities. This position requires an exceptional leader with strong technical expertise in both electrical and mechanical systems, who can navigate the complexities of a global team while delivering results aligned with company objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Electrical Engineering team directly, and the Mechanical Engineering team through an ME Manager, ensuring alignment with company goals, project timelines, and product development roadmaps.
Provide strategic direction for both electrical and mechanical design efforts, ensuring seamless integration between the technical disciplines and the other Product team functions, including Industrial Design, Product Management, and Product Development.
Act as the primary technical authority for all engineering activities, guiding teams through complex design challenges, technical trade-offs, and system integration.
Oversee the development and execution of engineering processes, best practices, and standards to ensure the highest levels of performance, reliability, and compliance.
Foster innovation within the engineering team, encouraging new ideas and approaches to product development and problem-solving.
Manage engineering teams in both the U.S. and China, ensuring effective communication, collaboration, and coordination across time zones and cultures.
Implement a framework for regular communication between the global teams, utilizing tools and processes to ensure that projects remain on track and issues are resolved quickly.
Travel as needed to both U.S. and China offices and manufacturing sites to build relationships, review projects, and ensure alignment between teams.
Lead recruitment, training, and development efforts, building a high-performing, collaborative team that can deliver innovative solutions on time and within budget.
Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations for all team members, conducting regular performance reviews to ensure accountability.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with 10+ years of experience in engineering roles with a focus on product development, including at least 5 years in a leadership role managing both electrical and mechanical teams.
Experience with consumer goods is a must, with strong preference for experience in consumer electronics.
Proven experience managing global teams, including international collaborations (experience working with teams in China is a strong advantage).
Deep technical expertise in both electrical and mechanical engineering principles, including system integration and design for manufacturing (DFM).
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex projects from concept to production.
