You will act as an advocate on behalf of Target and serve as an internal expert to both internal and external entities on a variety of key topics and governmental issues.

This work is performed in a dynamic, sometimes volatile, and highly visible political environment that involves significant reputation and brand considerations. A successful Team Member will be open, intellectually curious, and committed to working in a bipartisan fashion.

This role is a part of the Target Federal Government Affairs team working out of our Washington, D.C. offices. This Team Member will work collaboratively with two other full-time Target Government Affairs Directors. The position reports to the Vice President, Government Affairs.

As Director, Government Affairs you will:

  • Represent Target in retail industry and business groups, working groups, and coalitions that cover trade matters, among other issues.
  • Shape advocacy priorities in close partnership with Target’s trade team and its advisors, and other Target business leaders.
  • Establish and maintain an intelligence-gathering strategy to proactively identify emerging trends to help the company navigate business decisions.
  • Shape and execute Target’s federal government affairs strategy in collaboration with government and corporate affairs teams, ensuring alignment with the company’s overarching business objectives.

About You:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate meetings, resolve conflict, build consensus, establish rapport, and collaborate effectively across departments and all levels of team members including senior leadership.
  • Sound judgment with the ability to assess risks to Target’s reputation, work autonomously, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to build lasting relationships with external partners and work collaboratively across diverse groups in a way that positively supports Target’s brand.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas into simple, understandable messaging.
  • Ability to apply discretion and sensitivity while working with confidential information.
