Summary
Responsible for operating equipment in removing asphalt/concrete pavement, excavating earth, placing and compacting recycled concrete, base materials, asphalt, and performing tasks in the installation, repair, and maintenance of assigned area of responsibility.

The incumbent works in an outside environment, frequently exposed to unpleasant conditions and/or hazards. Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more several times daily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate and train staff on construction equipment, including Backhoe Loader, Industrial Box, Blade/Loader, Skid Steer Loader, Utility Wheel Loaders, Compactors, Rotary Mixer, RM300, Tractor with 30 Yard End Dump Trailer
- Work closely with assigned team members in performing the following: Set paving forms, Cut, place/tie rebar, Place/finish concrete, Remove paving forms, Clean debris
- Backfill new pavement with soil and place/roll sod
- Operate a transit/level to set grade for excavating, establishing sub-grade, and setting grade pens for finish grade.
- Inspect and maintain assigned equipment. Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections and complete daily reports for equipment operated.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment, as needed, under the direction of the Street Department's Equipment Maintenance Supervisor.
- Attend all required safety training/meetings and obey all safety policies and procedures.
- Inspect the work site to ensure all traffic control devices are in place, clean, and in good working condition.
- Respond to weather events and emergencies, including the ability to work shift schedules when required.
- Operate sanding trucks and aggregate spreaders on bridges, intersections, and streets.
- Load and deliver traffic control devices for high water events, including placement for road closures/monitoring water levels.
- Perform final clean-up after weather events to ensure alleys and streets are passable for emergency vehicles, including tree and debris removal, as well as all other general clean-up.
- May operate/train on specialized pieces of heavy equipment in the absence of Heavy Equipment Operator II, including: Asphalt Distributor Truck, Compactors, Hydraulic Excavator, Motor Grader, Paving Equipment (Asphalt Paver/Concrete Paver), Tractor with Haul Trailer, Track Loaders, Utility Wheel Loader
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- 6 months related experience
Preferred Qualifications
Education/ Experience:
- 2 years experience in operating heavy equipment
- Knowledge of safe work practices and hazards standard to work area
- Knowledge in care, operation, maintenance and repair of various power tools and power-driven equipment
- Knowledge of City of Garland Standard Construction Details
- Skill in maintaining and operating light and heavy equipment
- Skill in general maintenance and repair of various power tools and power-driven equipment
- Ability to understand and implement verbal and written instructions
- Ability to perform physical labor
- Ability to operate a variety of power-driven equipment
- Ability to work efficiently in a team environment and independently in the absence of supervision.
- Valid Class A Texas Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Valid Class C Texas Driver's License
