JOB SUMMARY: Collects and labels venous and capillary blood specimens from all patients, enters
collection data into LIS, and distributes specimens to appropriate departments for
testing.
JOB DUTIES:
- Performs venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks in such a manner as to obtain optimum blood specimens at a minimum of patient inconvenience.
- Monitors worklist for assigned floors and ensures specimens are collected in a timely manner; prioritizes workload appropriately.
- Prior to collection of all specimens, identifies patient per WRHS policy using patient’s full name and date of birth. Uses bedside armband barcode scanning system as appropriate.
- Print specimen labels, and in the presence of the patient, labels specimens with patient’s full name, date of birth, date, time, and employee number of the phlebotomist.
- Make notation on comment line of order in computer of any information necessary for the person performing the test or the ordering provider.
- Prints uncollected reports from LIS to ensure all collected samples have been received in the lab.
- Processes specimens by centrifugation as needed; uses judgement in assessing specimen suitability.
- Performs iStat ACT patient testing and Quality Control as required
- Enters data into the LIS, including collection data, cancelation of tests, and comments as appropriate.
- Enters physician’s orders into LIS, including any comments such as fax or call comments.
- Demonstrates initiative and makes good decisions in situations not covered by policies.
- Accepts and delivers constructive criticism in a positive manner.
- Maintains a clean and organized work environment; cleans up after themselves in the patient rooms and phlebotomy area.
- Assists phlebotomy supervisor in training of employees as appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor/director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Phlebotomy Certificate is preferred, not required
- Ability to multi-task and problem-solving skills
- Time management
- Proficient in computer skills
- Ability to communicate professionally with staff, including providers
- Attention to detail and quality
- Ability to analyze and understand information
- Possess a strong work ethic
ESSENTIALS:
- Must be able to report to work fit for duty and free of any adverse effects of illegal drugs, medical marijuana, prescription medication, and/or alcohol.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with other individuals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Handling of potentially infectious blood and body fluids
- Occasional lifting of objects weighing approximately 40 lbs.
- Working extended hour shifts.
- Managing stress associated with juggling multiple tasks.
- Standing or walking for at least 50% of shift.
- Excessive eyestrain due to long hours completing computer entry.
Must be able to hear and speak clearly
